The Kepler-Gymnasium Freiburg is a general education high school in Freiburg im Breisgau under the sponsorship of the city.
history
The Kepler-Gymnasium Freiburg was established in 1907, when the Rotteck-Gymnasium , founded in 1841 , which had developed a distinctly scientific profile in contrast to the so-called Latin schools , had reached a critical limit with over 1000 students and it was decided to set up a branch.
The first school building was built in 1875 and stood on the corner between Habsburgerstrasse and Wölflinstrasse in the Herdern district . The school was given new regulations and names several times. During National Socialism it was called the Erich-Ludendorff -Oberrealschule and was a school for boys only.
It was not until 1949 that the school was given its current name after the German mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571–1630).
In February 1968, pupils at the Kepler grammar school were the main initiators of protests against a rise in public transport fares, which ultimately led to the student protests in Freiburg.
In the 1990s, the old school building was torn down except for the prominent tower and the area was rebuilt. The Kepler Gymnasium found a new location in a new building in the Rieselfeld district .
profile
The Kepler grammar school is an all-day grammar school in open form, which means that the parents can decide on the extent of participation in the diverse educational offers.
Language education
In the 5th grade, all students start with English as their first foreign language. From the 6th grade onwards, the second foreign language is French, Latin or Russian, whereby the opportunity to learn Russian is a unique selling point of the Kepler Gymnasium in southern Baden. Spanish is possible as a third foreign language. In one class per year, bilingual lessons in English are offered as a special profile.
Natural sciences
From the 8th grade onwards, in addition to biology, physics and chemistry, students can focus on science and technology with interdisciplinary and practice-oriented work. Topics from the everyday experience of the students are examined scientifically, the experiment is the focus and technical skills in handling tools and machines are taught.
Working groups
At the Keplergymnasium there are working groups for theater and stage technology, song writing and producing, video and photography. Media scouts and school paramedics are trained. A Bach sponsorship is maintained. There is a partnership with schools in Burundi . All students have storage space in the Keplercloud for their personal data.
Learning studio
In the new building in 2007, a so-called learning studio was set up as a special feature of the school. Teachers are available all day long to support the students with free work, who can provide information on the literature and materials required and are contact persons for technical questions.
Luginsland
In 1920, the school's teaching staff founded an association to build their own country school home. Thanks to numerous donations, the Luginsland on Freiburg's local mountain Schauinsland was inaugurated in 1925 , which has since been regularly visited by schoolchildren of all ages in all seasons and used for lessons, leisure time and other school activities.
School with courage
Kepler-Gymnasium has been a member of the School without Racism - School with Courage network since 2017 and supports the ideas of the network through annually changing campaigns.
