Rainer Altherr

Rainer Altherr (born August 6, 1947 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German mineralogist , petrologist and geochemist . He was a professor at the University of Heidelberg and was deputy director of the Institute for Geosciences.

Life

After graduating from Kepler-Gymnasium in 1967, Altherr studied mathematics and physics at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and mineralogy from 1969. In 1973 he graduated with a diploma. He then worked there as a research assistant at the Mineralogical Institute, received his doctorate in 1975 and from 1975 worked at the Mineralogical-Petrographic Institute at Clausthal University of Technology . From 1976 he was assistant at the Mineralogical-Petrographic Institute of the TU Braunschweig and from 1982 professor for petrology at the TH Karlsruhe . In 1994 he became professor for mineralogy at the University of Heidelberg.

He was a board member of the German Mineralogical Society (2011). In 1981 he received the Albert Maucher Prize . In 2003 he became a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .
