Gerhard Preiß (born September 15, 1935 in Waldshut ; † March 26, 2017 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German math teacher and professor at the Freiburg University of Education .

Career

From 1955 to 1962, Gerhard Preiss studied mathematics and physics at the University of Freiburg . He interrupted his studies in 1958 after completing his intermediate diploma in order to teach mathematics for a year at the high school of the Swiss Alpine Middle School in Davos . In the meantime, his decision to become a qualified teacher matured, which is why he returned to the University of Freiburg in 1962, where he took the first state examination for teaching at grammar schools in the subjects of mathematics and physics. In 1963 he returned to Davos to teach again at the grammar school for four years. He then completed his legal clerkship at the Kepler Gymnasium in Freiburg, where he worked as a teacher from 1968 to 1972. At the German Institute for Distance Learning (DIFF) at the University of Tübingen , he worked from 1967 to 1976 in the mathematics department as a research assistant. In the 1976 winter semester he was appointed professor of mathematics and its didactics at the Freiburg University of Education , where he was Vice-Rector from 1982 to 1984 and head of the “Institute for Further Education” from 1989 until his retirement in the 2000 summer semester.

Gerhard Preiß was married to Ursula Haberstock and had three children.

“Be friendly to the numbers, then the numbers will also be friendly to you.” True to this motto, Gerhard Preiss developed the didactic concept “Discoveries in the land of numbers”. In this, children of preschool age should be introduced to numbers in a holistic and experience-oriented way in a playful world, the number countries. It was very important to the maths didactic to take away the fear of mathematics from children and in the broadest sense also from educational specialists. During his long-standing engagement with learning processes and within mathematics and the development of didactic concepts, he came across brain research in the mid-1990s . Since then, this has formed the foundation of his concepts. He assumes that when looking at learning processes - especially in early childhood mathematics education - the development of the brain cannot be disregarded. As a result, he introduced the term neurodidactics in 1993 . This implies that learning with all the senses leads to more neural networks and ultimately leads to better learning success. The concept of neurodidactics is now a controversial topic.

In order to spread his idea, he and his daughter Gabi Preiss founded the specialist publisher and training provider “Numbersland Prof. Preiss” in 2004. In the following years he developed a number of other didactic materials. In 2006, for example, the project “Discoveries in the Duck Country” for children from 2.5 years of age, in 2010 the “Land of Numbers in Primary School” and the “Discoveries in the Forest of Numbers” and in 2012 the “Magical Geometry”. In 2003 Gerhard Preiss also worked on a mathematical textbook for the South Korean company DAEKYO on the basis of the "Discoveries in the land of numbers".
