The Tanes Pumped Storage Power Plant is a pumped storage power plant (PSK) in Asturias , Spain . It is located on the Nalón between the Rioseco dam ( Spanish Presa de Rioseco ) and the Tanes dam ( Spanish Presa de Tanes ). The PSK was established between 1970 and 1978. It is owned and operated by EDP ( Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico, SA ).

Tanes dam

The dam is located in the municipalities of Caso and Sobrescobio . It dams the Nalón to a reservoir that is used as the upper basin of the PSK. The dam serves both to generate electricity and to supply drinking water. It was completed in 1978 (or 1979). The dam is owned and operated by the Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico, SA and the Consorcio de Aguas de Asturias .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 95 m above the foundation level . The top of the wall is at a height of 495 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 195 m. The volume of the dam is 337,000 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 21.8 (or 48) m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 426 (or 737) m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 730 m³ / s.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 491 (or 493) m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.63 (or 1.43 or 1.59) km² and holds 33 (or 34 or 36) million m³ of water; 25.3 (or 29) million m³ of this can be used.

Rioseco dam

The dam is in the municipality of Sobrescobio. It dams the Nalón into a reservoir that is used as the lower basin of the PSK. The dam serves both to generate electricity and to protect against floods. It was completed in 1978 (or 2007). The dam is owned and operated by the Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico, SA and the Consorcio de Aguas de Asturias .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 28.5 (or 29) m above the foundation base. The top of the wall is at a height of 383 m above sea level. The length of the top of the wall is 101 m. The volume of the dam is 37,000 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 53 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 575 (or 850) m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 830 m³ / s.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 379.5 (or 380 or 381) m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.55 (or 0.63) km² and has a capacity of 3.72 (or 4 or 5) million m³ Water; 2.82 (or 3) million m³ of this can be used.

power plant

The installed capacity of the PSK is 123 (or 124) MW . The average annual generation is 115 (or 137) million kWh . The power plant went into operation in 1978. Two Francis pump turbines are installed in the underground machine house. The nominal voltage of the generators is 10.5  kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased to 136 kV using power transformers.

The maximum power consumption in pumping mode is 110 (or 114.5) MW. The drop height is 102 and m in the turbine operating in pumping mode m 105th The maximum flow rate is 119.5 m³ / s in turbine operation and 115 m³ / s in pump operation.
