ALSA SLU (originally Automóviles Luarca, SA ) is an in Spain operating bus company based in Madrid that the British National Express Group belongs.

history

The company was founded as a public limited company in Luarca in 1923 , but goes back to the older El Luarca Automóviles de Viajeros company , which had existed since 1890.

In the 1930s and 1940s, the company mainly offered regional connections in Asturias , using vehicles from NAG , Saurer , GMC , Renault and Hispano-Suiza . In the following years, ALSA expanded into other regions of Spain. In 1964 the first international line from Oviedo via Paris to Brussels went into operation.

In 2005, ALSA was bought by the National Express Group for around 381 million euros. In the year before the merger (2004), ALSA had a turnover of 319 million euros, 3,100 employees, 1,400 vehicles and 93 million travelers. In the same year, National Express had sales of 3.78 billion euros with 40,000 employees, 19,500 vehicles and around one billion passengers.

ALSA today

In 2017, the company had around 8,814 employees and 3,132 buses, transporting 334 million passengers annually. The turnover was 757 million euros.

In addition to urban, regional and national routes, the company also operates long-distance bus routes to North Africa, Portugal, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Germany and is a member of the Eurolines network .
