The Salime reservoir (Spanish: Embalse de Salime) is a dam of the Río Navia in western Asturias , which partially forms the border with the Galician province of Lugo . The dam was inaugurated in 1954 and has a storage space of 265.60 million cubic meters.
After Arbón and Doiras, Salime is the third dam on the Río Navia. The dam is a gravity dam with a height of 128 m. The reservoir takes up an area of 685 hectares , and the facility is mainly used to generate energy.
history
The project was initiated by Saltos del Navia en Comunidad , a company that was founded in 1945 and belonged equally to the companies Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico, SA and Electra de Viesgo, SA . Financial support was provided by Banco Urquijo , which also worked out the project and the technical studies.
Joaquín Vaquero Palacios , who planned the project in the years after the Second World War, was hired as the architect . Preparatory work began in 1946, the dam and power station were built between 1948 and 1953, and the inauguration took place in 1954. For some time Salime was the largest dam in Spain and the second largest in Europe. It is considered to be one of the first projects of the gigantismo of the Franco era, which was the inspiration for many similar projects.
Enormous difficulties had to be overcome for the construction: Spain's economy was down and also suffered from the economic embargo of the victorious powers of the Second World War. The project seemed almost impossible and only through great effort could the shortage of funds be mastered. England supplied the turbines secretly and bypassing the UN embargo against Franco.
The preparatory and accompanying measures were extraordinarily extensive: tunnels were built to divert the river, sheet piling, warehouses, roads, inclined planes, cement mills, a 36 km long cable car for the transport of cement clinker from the port of Navia etc. 3500 workers from others Spanish regions - mainly Andalusia - were recruited. Several workers' settlements were built for them and their families. The food supply for workers was also a problem during these years of scarcity. About 100 workers lost their lives in accidents at work during the construction of the dam. The construction is particularly remarkable against the background of these difficulties.
Salime hydropower plant
The Salime hydroelectric power station (central hidroeléctrica) is located under the dam. It has four generator groups with 32 megawatts each, which were commissioned between 1953 and 1956. The total output is 128 MW, the power plant generates 350 gigawatts on an annual average. The Francis turbines used have a throughput of 152 m² / s, and the energy generated is dissipated via a 132 kilovolt network.
