The Arbón Dam ( Presa de Arbón in Spanish ) is a dam with hydropower plant in the municipalities of Coaña and Villayón , Asturias , Spain . It dams the Navia to a reservoir. The dam is used to generate electricity. It was completed in 1967. The dam is owned by Repsol operated and run by Repsol.

Barrier structure

The shut-off consists of a Erdschüttdamm with clay core on the left side as well as a subsequent fortification of concrete on the right side. The height above the foundation level is 32 (or 35) m. The top of the dam is at a height of 36 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 180 m. The volume of the dam is 322,500 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 21 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 3000 (or 3061) m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 3000 (or 3061) m³ / s.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 33 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 2.70 km² and holds 33 (or 38 or 41) million m³ of water; 12 million m³ of this can be used to generate electricity.

power plant

Repsol took over the power plant from Viesgo in 2018 as part of the purchase of several power plants. The installed capacity of the power plant was originally 56 MW . The average annual production is 170 million kWh . The power plant was built from 1962 to 1969.

The power plant's two Francis turbines originally had a maximum output of 28 MW each; they went into operation on August 30, 1967 and February 22, 1968. The machine house is located about 100 m from the dam on the right side of the river.

In 2017, the operator at the time, Viesgo, applied to reduce the approved installed capacity from 56 MW to 49.8 MW, as the 50 MW is rarely exceeded during ongoing operations. For this purpose, the maximum output of the two machines should be limited to 24.9 MW each.

Remarks

  1. a b c Notwithstanding this, the Confederación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico states an installed capacity of 112 MW, an average annual production of 350 million kWh and four installed Francis turbines; However, this is likely to be a mistake, as the specified fall height of 114 m is also incorrect.
