Celorio (Asturian: Celoriu ) is a Parroquia with 409 inhabitants (as of 2014) in the municipality ( consejo ) Llanes in the autonomous region of Asturias in northern Spain .

location

The place Celorio is not located directly on the Bay of Biscay -Küste but about 500 meters south of it at a height of about 50 to 80 meters above sea level. d. M. The distance to Llanes is about seven kilometers (driving distance) in an easterly direction; Oviedo , the capital of Asturias, is about 100 kilometers to the west.

economy

Until the middle of the 20th century, the inhabitants of Celorio lived mainly as a self-sufficient source of fish , from the income from their fields and gardens, and from cattle breeding. Today bathing tourism plays the most important role in the economic life of the place.

history

Celorio was on the coastal path to Santiago de Compostela ; the pilgrims found accommodation in the monastery of San Salvador and care in the adjoining hospital in case of illness or emergency. However, the stream of pilgrims gradually subsided during the Middle Ages.

Attractions

  • The Asturian rocky coast with its sandy beach bays is extremely attractive; the Playa de Borizu of Celorio is one of the most beautiful, but also the other seven beaches of the town are popular with holidaymakers.
  • The monastery of San Salvador de Celorio , which was dissolved in 1835, dates from the 12th century; however, it was fundamentally rebuilt in the 17th century; old building fabric has only been preserved to a small extent.
