The Aruliest ( Dacelo tyro ) is a kingfisher that lives on the Aru Islands and in the lowlands of southern New Guinea in monsoon forests, on the edge of swamps and in thickets of savannahs.
The up to 33 cm long Aruliest has a conspicuous plumage with bright blue wing covers and tail, a white breast and belly, a black and white piebald head and dark eyes. The call is gurgling, followed by a rattling, steady laugh. The Aruliest searches the ground for various invertebrates such as beetles , ants and ghosts .
Subspecies
The nominate form Dacelo t. tyro occurs on the Aru Islands, the subspecies Dacelo t. archboldi is native to New Guinea and has paler feathers.
