The Jägerlieste ( Dacelo ), English Kookaburra (loan word from Wiradjuri ), form a genus of birds within the family of kingfishers (Alcedinidae).
This genus includes four species that occur in Australia , Tasmania and New Guinea .
The Jägerlieste are large, up to 48 cm long, predominantly brown-gray and whitish colored birds.
They live in family communities in open forest areas, but also come to the city parks. They hunt mice and other small animals, especially reptiles and snakes . The young help the parents to raise the next brood, especially with red-bellied ruffles. As hatching helpers, they learn the hatching business and improve the siblings' chances of survival.
The call of the Jägerliests ( Dacelo novaeguineae ), also known as "Laughing Jack", . Because of its size, it is also known formally as Dacelo gigas .
