St Gorgon Church
The amazing church building for this small, remote municipality of Plovan, with its Romanesque columns, its large semicircular three Gothic arches in the north and its three Romanesque arches in the south, reflect the style of Pont-Croix, was built in the 13th century. The Gothic tower was only built in 1520. The later restorations of the apse and the walls of the corridors left visible cracks. The altar with statues of St. Herbot, St. Gorgon, patron saint of the parish, is flanked by statues of St. Eloy and St. Kidou, known in France as the St. Vitus. They date from the 17th century. The large number of statues in this small church resulted from the decay of the nearby Languidou Chapel, which fell into disrepair in the late 18th century.
Church patron Saint Gorgon
The Saint Gorgon Church is dedicated to Saint Gorgon or Gorgonius. He was a martyr of the Roman era under Emperor Diocletian . As an officer of this emperor, he converted to Christianity. Like his friend Dorothy Nicomedia, he is said to have refused to renounce his faith. As a result, both were tortured to death in the fourth century. First buried in Rome in the necropolis "Since two laurels", it was brought to Metz as a relic about 350 years later in 766. The Saint Gorgon church in Metz was laid down in 1788 to make room for new buildings. Saint Gorgon is celebrated on September 9th and honored with pilgrimages. Several French cities named themselves after Saint-Gorgon. Churches were also named after him, such as Metz, Varangéville (Meurthe-et-Moselle), Richemond (Lorraine) and Plovan (Finistère).
