Pont-Aven is a commune in western France in the Finistère department in Brittany .
Pont-Aven lies in the Cornouaille at the beginning of the confluence of the river Aven into the Atlantic . The municipality has 2801 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) on an area of 28.63 km² .
history
From 1886 an artist group around Paul Gauguin and Émile Bernard worked here and in Le Pouldu on the Laïta . This so-called school of Pont-Aven developed impressionism further in the direction of synthetism . Here, around 1888, under the influence of Gauguin, Paul Sérusier painted his painting Landscape with the Forest of Love in Pont-Aven , which is considered the defining image of this style.
