Charon Shemekia Copeland (born April 10, 1979 in Harlem , New York City ) is an American blues singer in the tradition of Koko Taylor and Etta James . She is the daughter of blues guitarist Johnny "Clyde" Copeland .

Shemekia Copeland was already on stage at the age of eight. At 16 she began her career as a singer and went on tour with her father. In 1998 their first album Turn the Heat Up! which was enthusiastically received.

With the second album Wicked from 2000, she won three Handy Awards and was nominated for a Grammy . In 1999 she received the Living Blues Award in three categories. 2001 was followed by one for best blues artist and artist of the year. The readers of Living Blues magazine gave her this award in 2010. The next album Talking to Strangers from 2002 was produced by Dr. John and immediately topped the Billboard Blues Charts.

In her worldwide appearances, Shemekia Copeland sang with blues legends such as Buddy Guy , BB King , Taj Mahal , Dr. John and Koko Taylor .
