Bénodet is a small French commune with 3568 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in Cornouaille . It is located in Brittany , in the Finistère department in the Quimper arrondissement . The name "Bénodet" comes from Breton : Ben means head and Odet is the river on which the municipality is located. The community is therefore at the head (or at the mouth) of the Odet.

geography

The place is in the Cornouaille landscape , 13 kilometers as the crow flies south of the city of Quimper at the mouth of the broad and deeply cut estuary of the Odet in the Atlantic . The estuary of the Odet is crossed north of the village by the Pont de Cornouaille , a high road bridge. The more well-known touristic places Concarneau and Pont-l'Abbé are only a few kilometers away.

economy

The formerly dominant fishery has now lost its outstanding economic position; today tourism plays the central role in Bénodet. There has been a casino there since the 1960s, when the town developed into the “lido of the Parisians” , and the fishing port has increasingly turned into a yacht and sport boat port (port de plaisance) . Today in Bénodet there is also a center for thalassotherapy , there is a cinema, bars and discos, which are mostly open in the summer months, numerous (fish) restaurants and a number of beds for people, mostly in smaller private accommodation and holiday apartments. There are several campsites in the vicinity. In the summer season, a passenger ferry connects Bénodet with the touristically attractive Sainte-Marine on the opposite bank of the river.
