The Pont de Cornouaille is a road bridge near Bénodet in the Finistère department in Brittany . It is named after the surrounding historical Cornouaille landscape . The bridge leads the départementale D44 , which runs through the adjacent forest area, at a great height over the deeply cut and at this point about 250 m wide valley of the Odet .

It is the only bridge over the Odet between Quimper, about 13 km away, and its mouth into the Atlantic, 2.7 km away .

description

The Pont de Cornouaille is 610 m long. It has two lanes on an 8 m wide carriageway and two 1.58 m wide sidewalks, which, given the distance to the next town, are mainly used by cyclists.

It has six openings with pillar spacing of 65, 110, 200, 110, 65 and 60 m. The 200 m wide main opening was the widest of all French girder bridges when it was completed .

The carriageway girder consists of an orthotropic plate on a 6 m wide steel, haunched hollow girder , which is designed as a continuous beam . It is 8.0 m high above the two river piers and 3.5 m at the top of the main opening; above the side openings, its height decreases to 2.5 m at the abutments . It was prefabricated in 26 parts in the SOTRACOMET factory in Maizières-lès-Metz in Lorraine . The parts, weighing up to almost 110 tons, were transported over 1000 km to the construction site by heavy haulage, assembled in cantilever from both banks and then welded .

history

The banks of the Odets were already inhabited in prehistoric times. The crossing of the tidal waters, which sometimes have strong currents and is exposed to the storms of the Atlantic, had an eventful history. Ferries were introduced in the 19th century, but they were unreliable and poorly maintained. In 1911 a steam-powered chain ferry was put into operation between Bénodet and the opposite Saint-Marine , which had various successors.

In 1929 there were first considerations for a bridge between the two locations and in 1933 possible locations were analyzed. It was not until 1954 that the current location was chosen and, ten years later, the administrative and planning preparations for the construction of the bridge began in 1964, which was designed by Gérard Cailliau in collaboration with the state building administration Direction départementale de l'équipement .

Construction finally began in 1968 and was completed in May 1972. The bridge was subject to tolls until 1987 .
