The Matawan Creek is a watercourse partially influenced by the tides ( tidal river ) on the coast of the Atlantic . It is located in northeastern New Jersey across from Staten Island , New York City .

Shark attacks occurred on July 12, 1916 at a point on the watercourse, which is about 25 kilometers inland , which initially killed the 12-year-old Lester Stillwell. While trying to recover Stillwell's body, 24-year-old Stanley Fisher was also attacked; shortly afterwards he succumbed to the consequences of the attack. On the same day, another boy was seriously injured by a shark attack.

The reports of these shark attacks, as well as two more that occurred right on the coast were, for the author Peter Benchley , the suggestion that the novel Jaws to write, published launch in 1974. A year later, Steven Spielberg based thereon movie Jaws in the cinema, is one of the classic films of action and horror films.
