The monastery Langonnet (Langonium) is a former Cistercian abbey in the town of Langonnet in Morbihan department , region Brittany , in France , about 32 km north of the town of Quimperlé and 6 km east of Langonnet, on the banks of the river Ellé near a Roman road.
history
The monastery was founded in 1136 by Conan III. , the Duke of Brittany, at the request of his mother Ermengarde and manned by monks from the monastery L'Aumône . Thus it belonged to the filiation of the mother monastery Citeaux . The daughter monastery of St-Maurice-de-Carnoët was founded by Langonnet in 1177 , the first abbot of which, later canonized Maurice Duault, came from the monastery of Langonnet. In 1255 Lanvaux Monastery , a daughter of Bégard Monastery , was subordinated to the Abbey. The monastery suffered in the wars of religion. After a three-year absence, the monks returned in 1598 to the ruined abbey, which was subsequently rebuilt. The monastery came to an end in 1790 during the French Revolution. In 1793 it became a base for the Chouans . In 1806 a stud was established. In 1858 the Pères du Saint Esprit moved in and set up a missionary seminary that later became an old people's home for missionaries.
Buildings and plant
Only the Gothic, groin-vaulted two-column chapter house from the 13th century has survived from the medieval abbey, which opens onto the cloister with a door flanked on both sides by two Gothic windows with leaf capitals. The remaining buildings come from the reconstruction around 1750. The church was not completed until 1788.
