The Bégard Monastery (Begardum) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Bégard in the Côtes-d'Armor department , Brittany region , in France . It is located around 14 km northwest of Guingamp .
history
The monastery was the first Cistercian settlement in Brittany in 1130 to be settled by monks from the monastery of L'Aumône on land donated by Count Étienne I. de Penthièvre . It thus belonged to the filiation of the Cîteaux monastery . The subsidiaries of Le Relec Monastery (1132), Boquen Monastery (1137), Saint-Aubin-des-Bois Monastery (1138), Lanvaux Monastery (1138) and Coëtmaloën Monastery (1142) were founded from Bégard . In Yorkshire , England , the monastery established the Begare Priory . In 1765 the monastery was at least partially rebuilt. It came to an end during the French Revolution in 1790. In 1857 the Congrégation du Bon-Sauveur moved in from Caen .
Buildings and plant
Only a few buildings that were newly constructed in 1765 have survived, including the abbot's house. Part of the surrounding wall has also been preserved. The abbey's dairy is still around one kilometer from the monastery. The Pluscoat dairy is still there.
