The monastery of Saint-Aubin-des-Bois (Sanctus Albinus de nemore) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Plédéliac in the Côtes-d'Armor department , Brittany region , in France . It is located around 6 km east of Lamballe .
history
The monastery was founded in 1138 (or 1137) by Geoffroy Botherel, the Count of Lamballe, and the Lords of Matignon, and was manned by monks from the Bégard monastery , which was itself a daughter of L'Aumône monastery . Thus Saint-Aubin belonged to the filiation of the Cîteaux monastery . 1143 confirmed Pope Eugene III. the monastery in his possession. In 1240 the abbey burned down. In 1255 the rebuilt church was consecrated. In the 15th century, the monastery is likely to have fallen in Kommende . It came to an end during the French Revolution . In 1796 two monks were killed by the military in search of Chouans . The monastery was then rented by a refugee monk until 1820. In 1825 it was acquired by the diocese of Saint-Brieuc and run as a retirement home for priests. In 1830 the Brothers of Mercy of St. John of God , whose hospice was moved to Léhon in 1838. The abbey was then demolished and used as building material for the castles of La Vallée and Saint-Aubin and the churches of Quintenic and Pléven.
