Acambay is a municipality in the Mexican state of México . It belongs to the Mexico City metropolitan area . The administrative seat of the municipality is Villa de Acambay de Ruíz Castañeda , while the largest place in the municipality is Pueblo Nuevo . The municipality had 60,918 inhabitants in 2010, its area is 464.47 km² .

The name

The name Acambay comes from Otomí : Ahka means God and b'aye means "mountain", thus roughly "place of the mountain of God".

geography

Acambay is located in the north of the state of México, 80 km northwest of Toluca de Lerdo .

The municipality borders the municipalities Timilpan , Aculco , Atlacomulco and Temascalcingo as well as the municipality Amealco de Bonfil in the neighboring state of Querétaro .
