Amealco de Bonfil is a municipality in the Mexican state of Querétaro . The municipality covers an area of 715.4 km². In 2010, Amealco de Bonfil had a population of 62,197. The administrative seat and most populous place of the municipality is the Amealco de Bonfil of the same name .
geography
The municipality Amealco de Bonfil is located in the extreme south of the state of Querétaro at an altitude between 2100 m and 3100 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Volcánica Transversal and 69% lies in the catchment area of the Río Pánuco , which flows into the Gulf of Mexico , and 31% in the catchment area of the Río Lerma , which drains into the Pacific . The predominant rock types are tuff (55%), sandstone (18%), basalt (9%), andesite (6%) and dacite (5%). Soil type of 67% of the municipality is the Phaeozem , followed by 25% Luvisol and 5% Acrisol . Almost 64% of the community area is used for arable farming, around 18% is forested, and around 17% is used as pasture land.
The municipality of Amealco de Bonfil borders the municipalities of San Juan del Río and Huimilpan as well as the states of Michoacán and México .

In the 2010 census, 62,197 people in 13,824 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 15,426 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 14,800 speakers of the Otomí . About 17.4% of the population were illiterate. 20,467 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 76% were men or just under 6.8% were unemployed. A good 25% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
