Querétaro is a municipality in the Mexican state of the same name , Querétaro . The municipality covers an area of 685.9 km². In 2010 the municipality of Querétaro had a population of 801,940 inhabitants.
The administrative seat and most populous place of the municipality is Santiago de Querétaro , the capital of the state. The municipality forms the center of the Zona Metropolitana de Querétaro and is the most populous in the state.
In the municipality lies the Cerro de las Campanas National Park and part of the El Cimatario National Park .
geography
The municipality of Querétaro is located in the west of the state of Querétaro at an altitude between 1700 m and 2800 m . 91% of it belongs to the physiographic province of the Sierra Volcánica Transversal and 9% to the Mesa del Centro . The municipality drains completely over the Río Laja and further over the Río Lerma into the Pacific . Predominant rock types are the igneous Extrusivgesteine basalt (28%), and andesite (24%) at each about 10% of alluvial soil and tuff and 8% sandstone - conglomerate . Soil type of 60% of the municipality is the vertisol , followed by 18% phaeozem . More than 42% of the community area is used for arable farming, around 24% are forested, 16% are urban areas, and 11% are undergrowth.
The municipality of Querétaro borders the municipalities El Marqués , Corregidora and Huimilpan, as well as the state of Guanajuato .

The 2010 census counted 801,940 people in 202,791 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 4,267 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 1,321 speakers of the Otomí and 880 speakers of the Nahuatl . A good 3% of the population was illiterate. 362,595 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 61% were men and 4.7% were unemployed. 3.3% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
