San Juan del Río is a municipality in the Mexican state of Querétaro . The municipality covers an area of 773.1 km². In 2010, San Juan del Río had a population of 241,699 people. The administrative seat and most populous place of the municipality is the eponymous San Juan del Río .
geography
The municipality of San Juan del Río is located in the south of the state of Querétaro at an altitude between 1800 m and 2800 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Volcánica Transversal and is located in the catchment area of the Río Pánuco , whereby it drains into the Gulf of Mexico . The predominant rock types are various extrusive rocks (28% tuff , 22% basalt , 19% volcanoclasts ) with 13% alluvions . Soil type of 46% of the municipality is the Phaeozem , followed by 39% Vertisol . Almost 60% of the community area is used for arable farming, around 13% is forested, around 11% is pasture and 10% is covered with scrub.
The municipality of San Juan del Río borders the municipalities Pedro Escobedo , Tequisquiapan , Amealco de Bonfil and Huimilpan as well as the states of Hidalgo and México .

In the 2010 census, 241,699 people in 61,488 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 1,271 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 391 speakers of the Otomí and 225 speakers of the Nahuatl . About 5.4% of the population were illiterate. 101,289 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which around 65% were men and a good 5% were unemployed. Almost five percent of the population lived in extreme poverty.
