San Juan del Río is a city of around 150,000 in the Mexican state of Querétaro ; it is also the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name ( municipio ) with approx. 255,000 inhabitants. Since 2010, the city is part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro to UNESCO World Heritage .

Location and climate

The city of San Juan del Río is located almost 170 km (driving distance) northwest of Mexico City at an average altitude of approx. 1920  m ; the city of Querétaro is about 55 km to the north-west. The climate is warm; Rain (approx. 585 mm / year) falls predominantly in the summer half-year.

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the region around San Juan del Río belonged to the tribal area of ​​the largely sedentary Otomí Indians, who, however , were harassed by the nomadic Chichimecs in the following years . In 1531 the place was founded by the Spaniards to secure the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro , which led from Mexico City to the “silver cities” of the north. The importance of the settlement grew; A Real Caja was set up here in the 17th century .
