Pierre-Sylvain Régis

Pierre-Sylvain Régis (* 1632 in La Sauvetat, hamlet of Blanquefort-sur-Briolance near Agen , † 1707 in Paris ) was a French philosopher and follower of Cartesianism . In his main work he gave the first systematic presentation of Descartean philosophy.

Life

Régis attended the Jesuit school in Cahors and then studied theology in Paris. He attended the lectures of Jacques Rohault in Paris and through this (and as a student of Robert Degabets ) became a follower of René Descartes . He taught his philosophy with great success in Toulouse , where Rohault sent him for this purpose in 1665, in Aigues-Mortes (where he met John Locke ), Montpellier (1671) and returned to Paris in 1680. There the doctrine of Descartes was forbidden at that time by the Archbishop of Paris because of the resulting disputes. This delayed the publication of his main work by ten years until 1690.

Within Cartesianism he was an opponent of Nicolas Malebranche , developed Descartean philosophy more in the direction of empiricism . In addition to his main work published in 1690 (which also contains significant deviations from Descartes' original teaching), he published responses to criticism from Jean Duhamel (professor at the Sorbonne) and Pierre Daniel Huet in the two following years . He was also involved in a dispute with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and was also a prominent critic of Baruch de Spinoza . The painting branch student Henri Lelevel had already accused him of Spinozism , which Régis rejected.

In 1699 he became a member of the Académie des Sciences .
