Anthony Michael Bourdain (born June 25, 1956 in New York City - † June 8, 2018 in Kaysersberg Vignoble , France ) was an American chef , writer and presenter of television documentaries .
life and career
Bourdain, of French descent, was born in New York City in 1956 to Pierre Bourdain (1929-1987), a Columbia Records manager , and Gladys Bourdain (nee Sacksman, 1934-2020), a journalist for the New York Times . He attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie and then trained as a chef at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America . After various positions in New York restaurants , he ran the Brasserie Les Halles there .
The success of his 2000 book Kitchen Confidential. What You Never Wanted to Know About Restaurants resulted in him receiving his own TV show on Food Network : A Cook's Tour , which aired in 35 episodes from 2002-2003. From 2005 he was the protagonist of another documentary series on US television with the title Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (2005-2012), which ran on German television under the title Anthony Bourdain - a question of taste . Other culinary programs followed such as The Layover (2011–2013) and Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (from 2013); he was also a juror for the American edition of The Taste .
Bourdain published several books, but only a few cookbooks , mostly crime novels and factual reports. In his reports from the US and international cooking scene, he describes the background to everyday cooking for strangers. His novels, which are set in this milieu, also describe work in the kitchen and the world of gastronomy , especially in New York City.
Bourdain, who lived in New York City, was married to Nancy Putkoski from 1985 to 2005. In 2007 he married the Italian Ottavia Busia. The couple divorced in 2016; the connection resulted in a daughter. From 2017 he dated the Italian actress Asia Argento .
Bourdain was in France for filming his TV series Parts Unknown when he was found dead after suicide in his hotel room in Kaysersberg Vignoble on June 8, 2018 .
