Behind the Garden Wall (original title: Over the Garden Wall ) is a two-time Emmy- winning US animated mini-series by Patrick McHale , who previously worked as author and creative director on Adventure Time with Finn and Jake . The series mixes fantastic and folkloric elements with a comedic and creepy tone.

action

The two half-brothers Wirt and Greg climb over a cemetery wall on Halloween, fall into a pond and get lost in the forest. On their search for a way back home, they are accompanied by Greg's new pet, a frog with a changing name who - it turns out - can sing beautifully. You meet the irritable bird lady Beatrice, who offers you to take her to Adeleide, the good soul of the forest: She would definitely know a way out. In addition, they repeatedly meet the forester who roams the forest in search of a mysterious tree species. With the oil that he presses from the wood of these trees, he feeds the flame of his lantern, in which he imagines the soul of his daughter. He warns the brothers about the beast of the forest, but they soon have to assume that the forester himself is the beast.

They make further acquaintances and finally reach Adeleide, but Beatrice has betrayed her: Adeleide is a wicked witch. Beatrice brought her the children in return for scissors that she can use to transform herself and her family back into people. Wirt and Greg escape, but Wirt loses the courage to ever find his way out of the forest. That is apparently the beast's curse, and the landlord is supposed to become one of those trees the forester is looking for. But Greg offers himself to the beast in his place while the host sleeps. Landlord and Beatrice team up again to save Greg, and the forester now also faces the beast: For all these years it was not his daughter's soul that he kept alive in the lantern, but that of the beast.

After the flame goes out and the beast dies, Wirt and Greg find their way back to the pond: Wirt can still pull his brother out of the water before he loses consciousness and only wakes up in a hospital.

production

Gustave Doré, 1867

Behind the Garden Wall is based on Patrick McHale's nine-minute award-winning short animated film Tome of the Unknown (USA 2013), which premiered on September 9, 2013 at the LA Shorts Fest . The series was produced by Cartoon Network Studios in 2014 and is the studio's first miniseries.

The first ideas for the series came up in 2004 with a more creepy and adventurous plot. McHale originally envisioned a Halloween special and struggled to rewrite the premise for a longer format. Ultimately, it was decided to use a mini-series format. McHale cited 19th century children's books, early 20th century American music and folk art , as well as visual influences from Gustave Doré and Walt Disney's Alice Comedies series of the 1920s , as inspirations . The character of Greg, however, is based on his own son and other elements of the story on his own experiences.

The stories of each episode were developed by McHale, Amalia Levari and Tom Herpich (those of the ninth episode also by Cole Sanchez and Bert Youn ) and implemented by various scriptwriters and storyboard artists. Nate Cash led directing .

In the original, the characters in the series are spoken by Elijah Wood , Melanie Lynskey , John Cleese and Christopher Lloyd , among others . The German dubbed version was made with Kostja Ullmann and Christian Brückner , among others . The German TV premiere took place on March 30, 2015 on Cartoon Network .

synchronization

The TV + sync in Berlin set to music the series. Michael Ernst wrote the dialogue books and directed the dialogue. Furthermore, he was in charge of the musical recordings and translated the lyrics into German.
