Episodes ( English for episodes ) is a British-American sitcom that was produced in five seasons from 2011 to 2017 . The series is about a British couple who traveled to Hollywood to remake their hit British television series, which ends with disastrous results.
The series was conceived by Friends inventor David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik , who previously worked together for The Class . The main characters are Friends star Matt LeBlanc , who plays a fictionalized version of himself, Tamsin Greig and Stephen Mangan , who previously worked together on the Green Wing series , Mircea Monroe , and John Pankow and Kathleen Rose Perkins .
In 2012 the series was awarded a Golden Globe .

season 1
British writer couple Sean and Beverly Lincoln are celebrated in England for a comedy series they wrote. At the after-show party of the BAFTA -Awards they are from the American broadcaster boss Merc Lapidus after Hollywood invited to a US adaptation set up their format. Once there, you are overwhelmed by the size and luxury. Soon after, however, they find that Merc, who is surrounded by yes-sayers, only wants to adapt their show because of the success and has not even seen it. He also demands major changes to the concept and swaps the lead actor on his own.
He tries to hire Matt LeBlanc, who is initially disinterested and is also rejected by the Lincoln. Matt eventually accepts the role because he is excited about the fee and the station ignores the writers' wishes as the station believes the series has a better chance of success with LeBlanc. While Sean quickly befriends Matt, there is always tension between Beverly and Matt. Matt repeatedly pushes through his change requests, so that the concept is tailored to Matt.
During the course of the season it is revealed that Merc has a long-term relationship with his assistant Carol, but that the only reason he does not leave his wife is because she is blind. Matt LeBlanc suffers from his ex-wife having custody of his children. He also encourages Sean to start an affair with actress Morning Randolph, although the latter insists that he is happy with his marriage.
Beverly becomes jealous of Morning and eventually gets involved with Matt in alleged revenge. In addition, Merc is not enthusiastic about the pilot . At the end of the first season, the Lincoln's want to return to England and their marriage is about to end. At the last moment they get a call that Carol managed to convince Merc to at least test the pilot. He did well there and a season is to be produced.
season 2
In the second season of Episodes , the series “Pucks!” Is finally produced and initially had great success, but it quickly collapsed because a competing broadcaster was simultaneously showing an extremely popular series with a talking dog that Merc had previously rejected. The remaining viewers of “Pucks!” Watch the series because of the young actors, not because of Matt and Morning, whose parts are then shortened. Matt is supposed to win one of the ex-colleagues from the series " Friends " for a guest appearance in order to improve the ratings, but only receives rejections. He starts an affair with Merc's wife. A former stalker of Matt appears again and Matt even invites her to his home and sleeps with her in his frustration with his career low. Carol breaks up with Merc because she sees no future in the relationship. Due to falling audience numbers, Merc is fired and Carol is to be his successor. Sean and Beverly get back together at the end of the season.
season 3
Carol does not succeed Mercs, the position is given to Castor Sotto, who has psychological problems, regularly visits a therapist and takes medication. Sean and Beverly are back together, but they still have problems, which is why they go to couples therapy. Matt becomes jealous of his younger co-stars and prefers to star in the new series on NBC , written by the former Lincoln's assistant. Sotto worries about the bad viewership of “Pucks!” And therefore changes the broadcast slot so that it is no longer in direct competition with the series with the talking dog. Carol falls in love with Sotto and has sex with him. Since the odds are not improving, “Pucks!” Is about to go. Matt doesn't seem to get the role on NBC and sleeps with Dawn's daughter Dawn. Elliot Salad, the head of the network, extends "Pucks!" To screw up NBC's tour, so Matt doesn't get the role on NBC and the Lincoln get a call from Los Angeles in London .
Season 4
After the show was extended, Matt lost his NBC job. Shortly afterwards, when $ 32 million was stolen from him, he ran into financial difficulties. He then gets drunk and persuades Sean and Beverly to sell their new show in order to secure themselves financially. In the meantime, the station gets a program director, Helen Basch. Merc got her first job, which is why she bought him a show format called The Box . Meanwhile, Carol begins an affair with Helen and ultimately becomes a lesbian couple. Shortly thereafter, Sean and Beverly are confronted by Sean's former writing partner, Tim, that Tim and Sean came up with the series idea. It was agreed that although Tim was named as the author, the Lincoln will continue to write the series. In order to earn money, Matt takes on the role of the game show host in The Box and has to work with the he hated Merc. Helen, meanwhile, becomes jealous because she believes Beverly is in love with Carol. During a meal, Carol meets Castor Sotto, who later offers her a job at CW . After Helen “caught” Beverly and Carol wading, she separates from Carol. Meanwhile, LeBlanc is moderating his first show episode, in which he clashes with Merc and then puts him in a box belonging to the show, from which Merc cannot get out of his own accord. Helen teases Carol, which leads her to accept Castor's job offer. Sean and Beverly are forced to work with Tim by Helen. When Carol wants to start her new job, she has to find out that Castor himself does not work at CW, but is still crazy, and she is therefore now without a job.

Matt LeBlanc is an actor and was named by the broadcaster as the lead character on the Pucks! engaged, where he plays the character Coach Lyman. LeBlanc is wealthy and charming, but also arrogant. He has two children with his ex-wife Diane, who divorced him after cheating on her several times. He is friends with Sean, although the friendship briefly breaks down after Matt has sex with Beverly. The relationship with the same is initially distant and hostile, but improves over the course of the series. After the end of pucks! he works as a presenter of Mercs game show .
Beverly Lincoln is a British screenwriter and wife of Sean. In Great Britain she was successful with the series Lyman's Boys, written with her husband, of which she is to write a US remake. Sean Lincoln is a British screenwriter and husband from Beverly. In Great Britain he was successful through the series Lyman's Boys written with his wife, of which he is to create a US version. In Hollywood, his relationship with Beverly deteriorates and he is increasingly drawn to Morning. After Beverly sleeps with Matt, he breaks up with her and sleeps with Morning several times. At the end of season two, he gets back together with Beverly. He is friends with Matt. After the end of pucks! he is writing another series with his wife.
Merc Lapidus is the former program director. He brought Sean and Beverly to Los Angeles. He was married but had an affair with Carol for 5 years , which left him shortly after learning that he had been released. After his release, he works as a producer and sells a game show to the broadcaster, which LeBlanc will host.
Carol Rance is Vice President of the Program and subordinate to the Program Director. She had an affair with Merc for 5 years, which she ended at the end of the second season. At the end of the fourth season, she announces and accepts a supposed offer for a job that turns out to be nonexistent. She has a close friendship with Beverly.
Morning Randolph is an actress hired by the broadcaster to play Nicola McCutcheon in Pucks! to play. She is older than Beverly, although she looks significantly younger, which is supposed to be the result of plastic surgery . She likes Sean and also has sex with him twice in season 2. Production and development
The idea for the series came from David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik, who wanted to show their personal experiences in Hollywood.
Most of the scenes were shot in the UK, but parts of the first episode were also shot in Los Angeles. The Las Vegas scenes were filmed in Camden Town, London, the scenes in LeBlanc's villa on Malibu Beach were filmed in the Mill Hill District. The scene at Hollywood Burbank Airport was filmed at Pinewood Studios .
The series is not rotated in front of spectators and rehearsed laugh is omitted.
humor
The humor in Episodes is mainly based on the satirical portrayal of everyday life in the television industry. It covers a broad spectrum of manifestations: On the one hand, the “more mature” humor is used by criticizing contemporary (US) society. The superficialities of human relationships and the cult of the body in Los Angeles are discussed several times. On the other hand, the joke of the series speaks to the childish humor; for example, one uses silliness, absurdity, simple situation comedy and slapstick . Sex jokes and (self) irony are the most common types of jokes.
In addition, the series binds viewers through a series of running gags. For example, it is often portrayed that nobody is aware of Matt LeBlanc's work outside of Friends . Another example is the frequent mention of Beverly's hatred of Los Angeles.

It premiered on January 9, 2011 on Showtime in the US. On January 10, 2011, it was broadcast on the British channel BBC Two . The series was then sold in another 186 countries.
In February 2011 Showtime extended the series to include a second season of nine episodes, which began airing in the UK on May 11, 2012 . In September 2012, the series was extended by a nine-part third season, the episodes of which were broadcast from January 12 to March 16, 2014. In mid-December 2013, a nine-part fourth season was ordered. The fourth season aired in the US on January 11th and ended on March 15th, 2015.
From September 5 to October 25, 2013, ProSieben Maxx broadcast the first two seasons of the series in the English original language with German subtitles. A German-language synchronization has not yet been broadcast on television, but has already been partially released on DVD.

Episodes was released on DVDs with region code 2. Season 1 was released in the UK on February 28, 2011, followed by season 2 on July 9, 2012. The third season was released on July 14, 2014 and season 4 on July 13, 2015.
Episodes was also released on DVD under regional code 1. The first season appeared on July 12, 2012, the second on January 8, 2013. The third season was released on January 13, 2015.
In German-speaking countries, Episodes is available on DVDs with regional code 2. The first season was released on DVD in Germany on June 26, 2015, followed by the second season on September 11. The third season appeared on November 20, 2015.

Review of the first season
In the US, the first season received mostly positive reviews. Matthew Gilbert of the Boston Globe described the show as a clever series about the problems of adaptations, Emily Nussbaum from New York wrote that the series was humorous and that the chemistry between the actors was right. The San Francisco Chronicle , among others, was less enthusiastic : There David Wiegand wrote that the acting was good, but the characters were less. He doubted the series idea and said the series was from people who "think the rest of America is still interested in Hollywood".
In the UK, reviews were mixed. Brian Viner from The Independent thought the idea was good and praised the opening credits, but found the implementation and acting as inadequate. The Guardian's Sam Wollaston described the series as the average comedy series that has some funny moments but is still immature.
The season received a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes , based on 20 reviews. At Metacritic, the season received a Metascore of 74, based on 26 reviews.
Review of the second season
The second season also received mostly positive reviews in the United States. Denver Post's Joanne Ostrow said she enjoyed the wit and romance of season two and particularly praised LeBlanc's performance. Ellen Gray of the Philadelphia Daily News praised that the second season of the series was funny, got more heart, but also got more serious. Brian Lowry from Variety expressed himself more negatively , who was of the opinion that the second season was still partly humorous, but it was mostly boring and the intellectual depth, such as with Entourage , would be missing.
Season Two also received mixed reviews in the UK. Sam Wollaston wrote in the Guardian that the second season was better than the first because it was funnier, but would continue to irritate. Oliver Franklin-Wallis from GQ called the series one of the best on the BBC.
The season received an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 14 reviews. At Metacritic, the season received a Metascore of 76, based on 14 reviews.
Review of the third season
The third season received mixed ratings from US critics. While some critics rated the season positively, others criticized it as inadequate. Emily Nussbaum wrote for the New Yorker that although the third season had a few small weaknesses, it could be viewed as a good job on the whole, while Phil Dyess-Nugent for the AV Club commented that season three was tiring, but LeBlanc was a great one Performance.
In the UK, the critics' rating was average to poor. Jake Wallis Simons wrote for the Telegraph that the series would get worse with the third season, it had some amusing moments, but it was losing itself in the world of the rich, so that the average viewer could not develop an emotional bond with the characters. Will Dean wrote for the Independent that season three was boring, had neither humor nor drama. Matt LeBlanc gave a good performance, but could not save the overall impression.

Review of the fourth season
The US critics gave season 4 mostly positive feedback. David Bianculli wrote for National Public Radio that season four was very funny and that it was portrayed well. He particularly praised the screenwriters Crane and Klarik. Newsday's Verne Gay praised the season as the best yet on the series and said it was the first to be really funny.
The British critics gave mixed ratings on average. Tom Rowley wrote for the Telegraph that season four is neither funny nor clever nor original and that he hopes it will be the last season. Euan Ferguson wrote for the Guardian that the series was entertaining, but the scriptwriters were too cautious.
The season received a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 8 reviews. At Metacritic, the season received a Metascore of 73, based on 4 reviews.
