The Strain is an American horror - television series based on the original novel series by director Guillermo del Toro and screenwriter Chuck Hogan based. It started in the USA on July 13, 2014 at the cable broadcaster FX . In Germany , it has been running on the pay-TV channel Sky Atlantic HD since February 12, 2015 , and the free TV has been broadcast on ProSieben since July 29, 2015 .

An aircraft that took off in Berlin lands at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City and alerts the crew in the tower, as it remains with the lights, signals and locked doors switched off. It seems like there are no signs of life inside the aircraft. The epidemiologist Dr. Ephraim Goodweather ( Corey Stoll ) and his team are called in to examine the plane - they find 206 bodies and four survivors. The survivors are quarantined, the supposedly dead are removed from the plane; later they afflict the population, mainly their families. Goodweather and two of his colleagues - together with the Armenian professor Abraham Setrakian and hindered by the authorities - try to stop the threat.

In 2006 Guillermo del Toro designed a detailed outline for The Strain as a television series and presented it to Fox . However, since Fox wanted to create The Strain as a comedy series, del Toro broke off negotiations. The literary agent Richard Abate then suggested del Toro to develop the outline together with the screenwriter Chuck Hogan in the form of a novel, which eventually became the Strain trilogy. The first part Die Saat (originally The Strain ) was released in 2009, the second part Das Blut (originally The Fall ) in 2010 and the third part Die Nacht (originally The Night Eternal ) in 2011.

After the release of the first part, several film studios and television stations showed interest in the rights for a film adaptation, but del Toro and Hogan initially rejected all offers in order not to be influenced by the film adaptations in the further development of the sequels. After the publication of the third part, they negotiated with all the television stations that had shown interest at the beginning, and finally decided to work with the station FX , because they wanted to stick to the novel as well as the concept of a completed series of three supported up to five seasons.

Del Toro and Hogan initially laid out the story for five seasons (the plot of the first volume of the trilogy was to be told in one season and the sequels in two seasons each). After completing the third season, however, del Toro, Hogan and showrunner Carlton Cuse decided to tell the last part of the trilogy in one season. For this reason and due to falling audience figures, the authors and the broadcaster finally decided to end the series after four seasons.

The series started in the USA on July 13, 2014 on the cable broadcaster FX . On August 6, 2014, FX extended The Strain by a second season with 13 episodes, which aired from July 12 to October 4, 2015 in the United States and from September 17 to December 10, 2015 in Germany. On August 7, 2015, FX ordered the third season, which has been broadcast by FX since August 28, 2016. In September 2016, FX extended the series for a fourth and final season.

After the success of the first season, a fifth season was originally planned, but due to falling audience ratings, FX Network decided to end the series with the fourth season.

Germany

In Germany, it has been running on the pay-TV channel Sky Atlantic HD since February 12, 2015 , and the free TV has been broadcast on ProSieben since July 29, 2015 .

reception

In his review of the pilot episode, Axel Schmitt from the industry portal Serienjunkies.de wrote : “During the hype of the last few years, vampires have mostly been portrayed as erotic beings in cinema and television, vampires had to be able to develop feelings, they had to look good and at least as much desire for sex are thirsty for blood. The Strain breaks with this trend in a pleasant way: Vampires are what they originally were: terrifying monsters ”.

The first season of the series received a rating of 87% on the Rotten Tomatoes website , based on 53 reviews. This corresponds to an average rating of 7.4 out of 10. At Metacritic , the first season received a Metascore of 72% based on 38 reviews.
