occupation

Magic City is an American drama series by Mitch Glazer that has been produced for the US cable broadcaster Starz since 2012 . It is set in the 1950s and shows how Ike Evans in Miami, with the help of the Mafia, fulfills his dream of his own luxury hotel (Miramar Playa) .

The first broadcast on Starz began on March 30, 2012. The German-language version was initially broadcast on the pay-TV channel Sky Atlantic HD from September 30, 2012 . The series began broadcasting on free TV on May 15, 2013 on ZDFneo .

action

Hotel owner Ike Evans is the focus of this series. However, in order to be able to realize his dream of his own hotel, he had to come to terms with mafia boss Ben 'The Butcher' Diamond, who is also a partner in his hotel Miramar Playa . To get rid of him again Evans makes various unsuccessful attempts. In return, Diamond travels to Chicago, to his boss Sy Berman, and asks him to get rid of Evans. Ikes Evan's eldest son, Stevie, is also at risk for having started an affair with Diamond's wife, Lily. His younger brother Danny decides to work for District Attorney Jack Klein, of all people, because he has no idea what crooked business his father is involved in. He is accordingly shocked when he learns about it through his work.

Ike Evans manages to come to terms with the head of the Mafia, Sy Berman, but he and his business have problems with a new gambling law. Wife Vera Evans is a former showgirl and at first doesn't know anything about her husband's illegal business and the nightly hustle and bustle in the hotel. The sons Danny and Stevie and daughter Lauren are from Ike's first marriage. After his wife died, he married Vera. This marriage remained childless.

background

Even before the first episode was broadcast, the series was extended by a second season with eight episodes in March 2012. In August 2013, however, Starz announced the discontinuation of the series after the second season.

The title melody comes from Henry Mancini ("Lujon" from the album "Mr. Lucky Goes Latin", 1961).

In the opinion of the producers, the background of this series, which is set in Miami at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis, is comparable to the film Casablanca . Just as covert attacks were prepared from Casablanca at the time of the Third Reich and people sought their luck in games and other businesses, the Cuban businessmen who were driven out by the communists also want to build a new existence here in Miami in 1959.
