Jessica Marais (born January 29, 1985 in Johannesburg , South Africa ) is an Australian actress .

Early life

Marais was born in South Africa and moved with her family first to Canada and New Zealand and then to Perth , Australia at the age of nine .

Six months later, Marai's father Tony died of a heart attack on his way back from a picnic . Marais and her younger sister were then raised by their mother. She attended John XXIII College for a year and then moved to St Hilda's Anglican School for Girls from 1995 until graduation in 2002.

Marais attended the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). She had appearances there as Ophelia in William Shakespeare's Hamlet and as a charity in Sweet Charity . During her senior year at NIDA, she was cast as Rachel Rafter in the television series The Chaos Family (2008-2013).

Career

Marais had several appearances on television series, such as the Mord'Sith Denna in Legend of the Seeker (2009-2010), as Rachel Rafter in The Chaos Family (2008-2013) and as Lily Diamond in Magic City ( 2012-2013). For her appearance in The Chaos Family , she won two Logie Awards in 2009 in the categories "Most Popular New Female Talent" and "Graham Kennedy Award for Most Outstanding New Talent".

Films she starred in include Two Fists, One Heart (2008), Fish Lips (2010) and Needle (2010).

Private life

Marais is engaged to Australian actor James Stewart, who also starred in The Chaos Family . She has a daughter with him.
