Copper - Justice is brutal (original title Copper ) is an American television series by Tom Fontana and Will Rokos . It is BBC America's first self-produced series . It is set in New York City in the 1860s during the Civil War . The main roles are played by Tom Weston-Jones as an Irish cop as well as Kyle Schmid , Anastasia Griffith and Franka Potente . It was first broadcast on August 19, 2012 on BBC America. The series was discontinued after the second season due to poor ratings.

Kevin Corcoran, an Irish-born police officer, tried in 1864/65 to maintain law and order in the Five Points slum district in the south of New York's Manhattan district . He is looking for information that will help him to uncover the disappearance of his wife and the death of his daughter. During the Civil War he got caught in a whirlpool of the social and societal classes of New York's aristocrats and Afro-American citizens.

Production and broadcast
After BBC America was previously only involved in co-productions and had mostly broadcast programs from Great Britain, Copper is the first self-produced series. The first season comprises ten episodes and had its premiere on August 19, 2012. A 13 episode second season was commissioned in October 2012. With the second season the series ended because the broadcaster BBC America decided not to produce a third season.

The first broadcast of the second season was from June 23 to September 23, 2013 also on BBC America to see. Sky Atlantic HD then broadcast the German-language version of this season from March 18 to June 17, 2014.
