Deborah Chow

Deborah Chow (* in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian film , television director and screenwriter . Two of her first short films , Daypass (2002) and The Hill (2004), were shown at international film festivals and received various awards. She became known to a larger audience in 2010 with her first feature film The Sum of Our Decisions , for which she was awarded the prize for the best debut film by a Canadian director at the Toronto International Film Festival .

Since then she has mainly directed numerous television series, including Mr. Robot , Vampire Diaries , Marvel's Iron Fist , Fear the Walking Dead , Marvel's Jessica Jones , Better Call Saul and The Man in the High Castle .

Life

Deborah Chow is the half-Chinese daughter of parents from Australia to Toronto ( Canada have emigrated), where she grew up. She received her bachelor's degrees in cultural theory and art history from McGill University in Montreal . Here she shot her first short film. After graduating, she completed her Masters of Fine Arts in film and directing from Columbia University in New York City . Her thesis, the short film Daypass , has been shown internationally at over 35 film festivals and has received several awards, including for the best short film at the Torino Film Festival .

Her international breakthrough came in 2010 with her first feature film The Sum of Our Decisions with Zach Braff in the lead role. Chow wrote the script and directed it. In the following years she mainly worked as a director of various television series . As a television director, she has been at the BBC America series Copper - brutal Justice is , the CW -series Reign and Beauty and the Beast , the CBC telecast Murdoch Mysteries and the USA Network series Mr. Robot cooperated. She also directed the 2014 adaptation of Flowers in the Attic , which featured Heather Graham and Kiernan Shipka .

Since 2015 she has worked increasingly with in successful and well-known series, including the Marvel -series Iron Fist and Jessica Jones , the AMC - Prequelserien Fear the Walking Dead and Better Call Saul and the Amazon -Eigenproduktion The Man in the High Castle . As a director she was involved in the first real series in the Star Wars universe, The Mandalorian .

Awards

Daypass won the award for best short film at the Torino Film Festival . In 2004, Chow was awarded the Kodak New Vision Mentorship, the prize money of which included funding for her first feature film. She was one of the first participants in the Berlinale Talent Campus and similar initiatives at the Toronto International Film Festival . Her first feature film The Sum of Our Decisions won the Toronto International Film Festival's Best Debut Film Award and was named one of the ten best films.
