action

In 1597 , the bubonic plague broke out in Seville , and the majority of the population suffered from famine . Mateo, a former soldier , was forced to flee the city many years ago as he was sentenced to death by the Inquisition for printing banned books on Protestantism . Now he is returning to Seville, having promised his late friend Gérman that he would bring his illegitimate son Valerio out of the city should there be an epidemic . Mateo is staying in the palace of his best friend Luis de Zúñiga for the time being. He is now an extremely wealthy businessman and a member of the city council. Mateo is looking for Valerio, who has fled the orphanage where he lives. He also finds him, but Mateo is arrested shortly afterwards and is supposed to be executed for heresy .

The Inquisitor General of the Catholics , Celso de Guevara, offers Mateo the pardon if he is investigating a murder case in return . The victim is Ignacio Azuaga, a powerful businessman. He suffered an extremely excruciating death by impaction , and his body is completely bloodless. He also has stigmata on his hands and feet . Azuaga is not the only victim. Lucina Utera, daughter of the Protestant leader Capitan Utera, and Alejandro de Dresdner, the treasurer of the palace from Dresden , are murdered in the same way. Monardes, a doctor, helps Mateo by performing autopsies on the bodies, a practice that has been banned by the Church. Monardes also helps Leandra, a friend of Valerio's, whose brother died of the plague and who fears that she is also ill.

Luis rises to the city council after Morata, who stands above him, dies of the plague. Mateo meets with Teresa Pinelo, Gérman's widow. She actually inherited a textile factory from her husband , but her manager runs it because as a woman she is not allowed to do so. To the displeasure of the powerful, many prostitutes work in the factory . With Teresa's help, Mateo finds out that Gérman did not drown , but was stabbed with a spear . Mateo concludes that Ledesma, a well-known Protestant, must be the murderer. It turns out that Pedro Lanzas, an old friend of Mateo, is behind Ledesma. He commits suicide to avoid the inquisition. A secret book contains information that money hidden in the harbor was to be used to support Protestants in a battle in Flanders . Luis, Capitan Utera, Benjamin Azuaga, the owner of an indigo factory , and other people who were not named are arrested on the basis of a list . They are burned at the stake during a city festival . It turns out that Celso started the murders to get Ledesma and as many other Protestants out of the way. Mateo leaves Seville on a ship for India . Valerio stays in Seville and inherits his late father's factory.

reception

In the Internet Movie Database, the series received a 7.3-star rating based on 736 votes.

“It takes time for the characters to take shape against this teeming background. It remains to be seen whether the plot drawn by the hair (Rafael Cobo's book), whose intriguing part could also have pleased the 'Sopranos', will help. The success of the series in Spain - the second season has already been announced - could also be due to the fact that in 'The Plague' the whole counts more than the individual. This whole thing has a different character than the American series, and it has a lot to offer: power, sex, religious madness and political corruption, plus an uncontrollable epidemic and, as a superstructure, the end of the Golden Age of Spain. So a lot of material to withdraw and to pass the time. "

Julian Ignatowitsch from Deutschlandfunk says, “The series can therefore compete with the major international series productions in every respect, (...) also because the first season in Spain was recently more successful than Game of Thrones. Both series are quite similar in appearance and setting. Even in the gloomy, scheming atmosphere. The plot is less: "The Plague" is more claustrophobic, more concentrated, has no dragons or undead and focuses entirely on its protagonist, namely the broken hero Mateo. So not a copy, but a great historical drama ”.
