history

With the opening of the Südbahn (from Vienna to Gloggnitz from May 5, 1842) the Semmering area became the preferred summer resort . As accommodation option , the castle-like mansion on the site of the former was 1856/1857 House on the Waag designed by the architect Anton Hefft for Johann M. Waissnix and Alois Waissnix built.

From 1859 to 1864 the villa was rented by Emperor Franz Joseph I , who went hunting in the Rax area from there . Partly the Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary was also present, which led to the naming "Sisi-Schloss". It was the summer stay of Crown Prince Rudolf and Archduchess Gisela . Archduke Carl Ludwig lived here from 1867 to 1869 .

From 1870 the villa served as a branch of the Kaltwasser-Heilanstalt, which was also built in 1866 according to the plans of the architect Anton Hefft and demolished in 1969.

The history of the house is shown in an exhibition.

architecture

The three-sided system in forms of Romantic Historicism with elements of Tudor Gothic stands above the Schwarza in a landscaped park of the previous building. The facade of the two-storey villa is structured with narrow polygonal pillars and a terracotta frieze, a gable projection with a lattice balcony shows towards the valley, and a small courtyard with a lattice fence between pillars towards the street. In the middle of the courtyard there is a marble wall fountain with mascarons and mussel shells, which was initially a single fountain at the old Burgtheater and was transferred here. In the center of the fountain a pyramid pillar carried a bust of Emperor Franz Joseph, labeled Fossati in 1917, donated by Karl Waißnix in 1917, the bust formerly stood in front of the town's school and was transferred here around 1970.
