action

season 1

Pietro Savastano is the boss of one of the most powerful and influential Camorra clans in Naples . Savastano's right-hand man is the ambitious Ciro Di Marzio, one of the most experienced and cold-blooded soldiers in the clan, who has been called "the immortal" since an assassination attempt. When Ciro set fire to the mother of the rival clan boss Salvatore Conte's mother on behalf of Savastano, a war broke out between the two families, during which Conte fled to Spain . Ciro also takes care of Pietro's immature son, Gennaro, to prepare him for the duties and responsibilities of the future boss of the family. Gennaro is hospitalized after a serious motorcycle accident. When Pietro finds out, he takes his car and drives to the hospital. On the way there, he is stopped by the police. When the car is subsequently checked, drugs and several thousand euros in cash are seized, whereupon Pietro is arrested and sent to prison.

Pietro's wife Immacolata takes over the leadership of the clan, but she distrusts Ciro and considers her son Gennaro to be incapable. Although Pietro issued orders from prison, Immacolata passed her husband over and asked Ciro to travel to Spain, where he and Salvatore Conte reached an agreement on a peace treaty and business relations between the clans. She also sends the recovered Gennaro on a dangerous mission to Honduras , where he is supposed to organize new drug deliveries as Pietro's successor. After a long stay in Honduras, Gennaro returns to Naples matured and is far more serious, violent and self-confident than before. Although Gennaro feels ready to lead the clan, the older members of the Savastano clan do not recognize him as a boss.

When Gennaro makes some momentous decisions, increasingly surrounds himself with younger clan members and Ciro increasingly evades responsibility, Ciro makes the decision to split off from the Savastano family with other Camorristi. He has a confidante of Salvatore Conte killed behind Gennaro Savastano's back in order to provoke another feud between the Conte and Savastano clan and thereby weaken Gennaro's position. Pietro Savastano, whose health has meanwhile deteriorated, can no longer issue orders due to the transfer to a maximum security prison ( Article 41-bis ). Immacolata discovers that Ciro is behind the clan's sabotage. When she confronts him with it, he has her killed immediately after the meeting. Gennaro also finds the evidence of Ciro's betrayal of the family. He then has the alleged traitors in the clan killed, including many of the older members who are still devoted to Pietro Savastano. However, Ciro and Malammore, one of the most loyal members of the Savastano clan, escape an assassination attempt by Gennaro's men.

After the murders, Gennaro holed up in the Vele di Scampia to prevent the expected attacks by Ciro or Salvatore Conte, who has since returned from Spain. When he learns from an informant sent by Ciro that he will be attending a choir performance for his daughter, he sends his men off to kill him. These are intercepted on the way there by Conte and his men and mostly killed. Gennaro arrives at the theater alone with a kidnapped boy from the neighborhood, disguised as a family man, and faces Ciro. Ciro, who used his own family as decoys and was already waiting for him, does not hesitate and shoots Gennaro, who goes down. Ciro's daughter and his wife escape unharmed in the panic.

In the end, Pietro Savastano is driven to another prison in an armored vehicle and the car is attacked by masked men. After the attackers have freed Pietro Savastano, Malammore reveals himself. In the last scene, Gennaro lies shot on the floor and is apparently still alive.

season 2

In his hiding place Pietro Savastano learns of the life-threatening injuries of his son, but cannot do anything for him in his situation. After his recovery, Gennaro stays with his Central American drug suppliers and organizes the deliveries to Europe, his father Pietro goes into hiding in Cologne. Ciro takes over the business of the Savastanos in Naples and, together with other local bosses, forms a kind of cooperative with central drug purchasing via Salvatore Conte, so that the Savastanos cannot gain a foothold again in view of the closed block. The alliance divides the sales territory of the Savastanos among themselves and agrees to resolve conflicts together. However, their dependence on Conte as a supplier is increasingly causing displeasure.

Ciro now has to do more to ensure his safety and protect his family. His wife realizes that Ciro was abusing their daughter as a decoy and considers seeking protection from the police for both of them. She is seen by a man from Ciros on the way to the presidium, but makes up her mind and drives home again. Ciro kills her anyway, because she wants to turn away from him and because of the alleged betrayal.

Gennaro returns to Europe, finds a major buyer in the Roman building contractor Don Giuseppe, who is also a member of the Mafia, and starts a relationship with his daughter Azzurra. A meeting with his father in Cologne reveals a deep rift between father and son. While Pietro Gennaros calls for unconditional support to buy weapons, take revenge and regain his turf, Gennaro sees his future in new and far more profitable drug and real estate businesses in Rome. When Pietro tries to close the deal with his arms supplier, a Calabrese who has fallen out of favor with the 'Ndrangheta , he and his son get caught in an armed attack. Gennaro and Pietro escape the shooting, while all the other guests in the pub are shot. On the run from the German police, Gennaro brings his exhausted father to safety. After a night in a warehouse, Pietro is picked up and disappears without saying goodbye. Pietro returns to Naples, Gennaro to Rome.

In his secret hiding place, Pietro maintains contact with his people through the boutique seller Patrizia, a niece of Malammore, and organizes actions against the alliance members in order to divide them. Ciro knows that Pietro is back in town, but cannot track him down. Meanwhile, Salvatore Conte has a secret love affair with a transsexual singer. When one of his men, 'o Mulatto, grossly insults Conte's lover at a party, he is hurt and humiliated by Conte. Ciro takes advantage of this conflict, pulls Conte's men on his side and kills him with their help.

To prevent a war, Ciro meets with Gennaro in Trieste . Contrary to his father's order to kill Ciro, he agrees with him that the Savastano clan will receive a section from which Ciro's alliance will stay out. But the Savastanos are not allowed to leave this area. This arrangement does not suit Pietro at all and from now on he tries to destroy Ciro's alliance by stirring up internal conflicts. Even Gennaro's old friends who survived, such as' o Track, do not want to be restricted and break the agreement. After their punishment, they switch to Ciro's alliance.

Azzurra becomes pregnant and the wedding with the delighted Gennaro is being prepared. With 'o Principe, he has drawn one of Ciro's alliance members to his side. But his plan is thwarted by his father, who in turn wants to break the alliance in his own way and has' o Principe in his sights. He shoots' o Principe, although he reveals his collaboration with Gennaro. After 'o Principe's death, allies suspect Ciro's only remaining old friend,' o Nano, who has to flee with his family. In his hiding place, however, he is shot dead by Pietro's men in front of his family.

Ciro doesn't know who was responsible for the death of his last friend. He suspects one or more of his allies who wanted to avenge 'o Principe's death. The alliance falls apart, Ciro's previous ally Scianel also rejoins the Savastanos, but Pietro sends assassins. She managed to flee in time, but was arrested while trying to escape. She had previously killed 'o Track after he initiated a failed assassination attempt on her newly released son. She drowns him in the same way he killed her brother Zecchinetta in the first season. Her son, who has just been released from prison, is also murdered.

Ciro, now on his own, who has developed remorse for all his murders, especially the murder of his wife, has been able to identify Patrizia as the messenger and has her shadowed in order to track down Pietro. After a chase, Patrizia and Pietro can get to safety in time before Ciro storms Pietro's hiding place. In his new, now open residence, Pietro Patrizia reveals that after the death of his wife Immacolata it is time for a new woman to be at his side, also to start a new family. He has chosen the much younger Patrizia for this and she enters into a relationship with him.

The remaining allies are also liquidated one after the other by Pietro. Now Pietro takes the final blow against Ciro and lets Malammore kill Ciro's little daughter on the way to school, along with her protectors. Ciro breaks at this act and crawls desperately. In the meantime, Gennaro has arranged for his father-in-law to be arrested during the wedding to Azzurra so that he does not have to share his power. Azzura tolerates the intrigue against her father because of love and the unborn child.

Pietro quotes Gennaro, who does not want to submit to his father any more than his father-in-law, to a meeting in Naples, where he is supposed to receive new instructions from his father. It is suggested, however, that in truth Malammore is supposed to kill the son who has reneged on him. In Naples, however, Gennaro visits Ciro, who in his grief does not care whether Gennaro will kill him now. But Gennaro speaks to Ciro, hands him a pistol and travels back to Rome. Pietro is then shot at the meeting point at the grave of his wife Immacolata von Ciro, apparently informed by Gennaro of the time and place of the planned meeting. In the meantime, Gennaro's son is born. When asked what his name should be, he mentions the name Pietro.

season 3

Malammore, who finds the body after the crime, initially hides the death of Pietro Savastano. He doesn't tell his niece and Pietro's partner Patrizia about it either and hides the body in the cold store of a slaughterhouse. Malammore is now planning to take power in the Savastano clan himself. When Gennaro learns of his father's death, he travels to Naples and organizes a large but secretly held funeral at night with the participation of the residents of the neighborhood. At a meeting Gennaro is convinced by the bosses of the other districts not to leave the Savastano area to others, but to continue to administer it himself. You undertake to keep a respectful distance, as before, and receive exclusive supplies from Gennaro.

Malammore learns of Ciro's hiding place and sets off with Gennaro to kill him. After Gennaro shot a man there, Ciro appears, shoots Malammore from behind and one of Gennaro's men takes care of Malammore's driver. Gennaro's father-in-law Don Giuseppe is placed under house arrest, which he is supposed to spend in the new house of Gennaro's family, after he has been released from custody. He realizes that Gennaro is responsible for his situation and forces Gennaro's asset manager to assist him. Meanwhile, Ciro works as a smuggler, smuggler and handyman for a local criminal clan in Bulgaria. He has a good relationship with his boss, but with his son he has a deep mutual dislike. When the latter tries to make him a scapegoat in a deal with an insignificant young mafia group, kept small by the Neapolitan bosses, and the boss, although he admits that he wanted a son of the Ciros format, stands behind his offspring, Ciro shoots them both along with their bodyguards. He frees a young forced prostitute, whom he brings back to Albania on his way back to Naples.

Gennaro bribes a witness against Scianel through Patrizia, who then withdraws her testimony in court. Scianel is released and takes Patrizia into service as her confidante and messenger. Despite Scianel's thirst for revenge, they agree on a fragile collaboration. Back in Naples, Ciro joins the petty criminal mafia group, whose leader Enzo, known as the "High Born", he met in Bulgaria. The "high born" has ambitious plans, as his father once fell out of favor and his respected family clan was disempowered as a result. Gennaro awaits a drug delivery and tells his asset manager about the smuggler's ship. He passed this information on to Don Giuseppe, who had the ship searched unsuccessfully. Meanwhile, Gennaro receives the drugs on the open sea and then kills his asset manager, who was convicted by this trick, with the watch that Pietro Savastano had given him as a brass knuckle.

Gennaro goes to a meeting with his last remaining childhood friends from the old Savastano clan around o'Track. There he was intercepted and brutally beaten, and his childhood friends were shot. His father-in-law Don Giuseppe reveals himself to be responsible and reports that he had Gennaro's Central American drug contact killed and that he has now taken over the business himself. He also reported him to the tax authorities so that all of his assets would be frozen. But he will let him live if he never leaves Naples again. He should never see his wife Azzurra and his son Pietro, Don Giuseppe's grandson, again. After his recovery, Gennaro turns away from drug trafficking and opens up new business areas in the field of the exploitation of the unemployed. He takes over ailing companies, lets people work for himself and ensures through his contacts in politics - he had installed an acquaintance as district mayor in the first season, who is now running for the regional council - for extremely lucrative public contracts.

Ciro and Gennaro are now gradually building up the small mafia group under the leadership of Enzo as advisors in the background and, through several well-planned violent actions, achieve that the established alliance of bosses, which also works with Don Giuseppe, has to give up part of their turf. Enzo officially receives the quarter that his father was always denied even before his father fell into disgrace. To ensure that this success does not remain the status quo, Gennaro has the sister of the “high born one” murdered so that she can take revenge against the alliance that he blames for the attack. In an attempted assassination attempt on one of the bosses, however, Enzo is seriously injured and loses an eye.

Through her messenger Patrizia, Scianel reveals Gennaro's plan to the alliance, also to become part of the alliance herself. Don Giuseppe then takes his son Pietro away from his daughter and hands him over to the alliance so that Gennaro is now completely in his hands. He responds to all demands and humiliations, sometimes only in appearance, and thereby achieves that his son is brought back to his mother Azzurra. She feels sheer hatred towards her father Don Giuseppe and, in secret, unauthorized phone calls with Gennaro, indicates that her father must be eliminated.

The alliance of the bosses and Don Giuseppe offer Gennaro another deal through Patrizia as an intermediary: If he delivers Enzo and Ciro to the knife for them, his family can be with him again. When the hostages are handed over, Gennaro reveals their whereabouts to the bosses, who then immediately dispatch a killer squad. A sniper is waiting for Gennaro himself at the delivery point. But Gennaro betrayed the plan to Ciro and Enzo and devised a risky one of his own. The killer squad runs into an ambush, Patrizia kills the sniper, Don Giuseppe is killed by Ciro in a booby trap and the boss who hired him was killed by the survivors of his own kill squad, which, given the choice of being recruited or dying, now for Enzo is working. Gennaro is now reunited with his family and has broken the power of the alliance.

The only way out for the rest of the alliance is to add Gennaro and Enzo to their ranks. As a sign of goodwill, they sacrifice Scianel, who is shot by Patrizia. Patrizia had hated Scianel for years and had secretly worked for Gennaro the whole time. The area of the slain boss is divided between Gennaro and the high-born, which is very displeasing to him, as he had expected more and does not want to accept Gennaro as the foreseeable future boss. He allies himself with the two remaining bosses of the alliance who kill their own mentor, the "strategist", and invites Gennaro and Ciro to a victory celebration on a yacht that serves as a trap. At gunpoint, Ciro protects Gennaro and assumes all guilt, including for the death of Enzo's sister. This forces Gennaro to kill Ciro, which Ciro does with tears.

Trivia

Gomorrah was filmed in 2008 by the director Matteo Garrone under the title Gomorrah - Journey into the realm of the Camorra and received several awards. Just like this, the television series was and is often filmed in the Naples suburb of Scampia , where the shabby high-rise Le Vele (so called because of its silhouette reminiscent of sails) is located, or in the outskirts of the city.

The Italian writer and journalist Roberto Saviano has lived under police protection since the novel was published and has kept himself and his family in hiding.

“This book destroyed my life. It is important to report, not to show fear, not to be silenced. But it is just as important to fortunately defend your road. "

- Roberto Saviano : The world

The character Pietro Savastano portrayed by Fortunato Cerlino is based on the Camorra boss Paolo Di Lauro .

The character Gennaro Savastano portrayed by Salvatore Esposito is based on Cosimo Di Lauro - the eldest son of Paolo Di Lauro.

The Secondigliano alliance introduced in season two actually exists and was formed in the late 1980s.

Reviews

First season

“In 'Gomorrah - The Series' there is no place for Mafia romanticism, none for the pleasure in aesthetically staged cruelty, none for recreational areas in the form of romantic subplots and also not for heroic rebellion. The lead director Stefano Sollima ('Romanzo Criminale') stages a panorama of evil that is among the best and most suggestive of what is currently on television. The co -production by Sky Italia, Cattleya, La 7 and Beta Film does not have to shy away from comparison with the 'Gomorrah' film or with the HBO series ' The Sopranos '. "

“The Italian mafia series 'Gomorrha' provides grandiose pictures of the interior of the Neapolitan crime organization Camorra. The story about an aspiring Mafia soldier shows us in Germany that outstanding European television is possible. "

- Axel Schmitt : Serienjunkies.de

Second season

“As in the recently launched Netflix production ' Marseille ', the second season of 'Gomorrah' is an exemplary demonstration of how the economic dynamics of the war for a city can be traced in a series format with a panoramic view and at the same time a lush, multi-layered ensemble of figures can be developed . "

Third season

"The third season of 'Gomorrah' has become the definitive Mafia swan song, it is about the end point of paranoia, about the absolute loss of meaning, about the self-tearing of the family."

- Christian Buß : Spiegel Online

Fourth season

“The prelude to 'Gomorrah' is once again an act of unleashed violence: an execution of democracy. Current political references were always held back in the series project based on the submission of Mafia scout Roberto Saviano - perhaps also because these references would already be out of date given the constantly overheating Italian political scene when they were broadcast. Nevertheless, precise social dynamics and moods are negotiated. "
