The Vele di Scampia complex (German The Sails of Scampia ) is one of the most important social housing structures in Italy .

History and conception

In Scampia , a northern suburb of Naples , the seven buildings were constructed between 1962 and 1975 according to plans by the architect Franz Di Salvo . The characteristic shape of the towers is reminiscent of sails ( vele ), hence the building's nickname. In its conception, the building is significantly influenced by the so-called Unité d'Habitation by the Swiss architect Le Corbusier . A large number of functions should be available in the building that enable the residents to live as a shared apartment.

In the period that followed, the buildings in the district, which was notorious as a problem area and a drug hub. The buildings, which were in extremely poor condition, were still inhabited. It was not until the late 1990s that some of the residents began to be relocated, and between 1997 and 2003 the first three Vele , buildings F , G and H, were demolished. In June 2019, the city council decided to demolish three more buildings. Of the original seven buildings, only building B is to remain and be renovated. From 2023, the renovated building is to be used by the public administration of the metropolitan city of Naples .

The next phase of demolition began in February 2020 with the demolition of Building A , also known as Vela Verde (English: green sail ). By this time, 800 families from the Vele had already moved into new social housing.

The Vele in the film

Scenes from the film Gomorrah - Journey to the Empire of Camorra and the television series Gomorrah were filmed in front of and in the buildings.
