The district (founded in 1902 as ICAM) is known by the obvious to Le Corbusier oriented residential complex Il Quadrilatero the housing company Azienda Territorial per l'Edilizia Residenziale ATER , who also "ATER" or "Alcatraz" is called. This example of social housing was designed by a group of engineers from Trieste under the direction of Carlo Celli's architectural office ; It was built between 1969 and 1983. The incompletely built complex consists of two L-shaped structures forming a rectangle with a volume of 267,000 cubic meters and an area of 89,000 square meters and comprises 468 apartments for around 2,500 residents. The first apartments were mainly occupied by young couples between 1979 and 1981. The aim of the project was to create an independent settlement based on Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation conception that would offer all basic facilities such as shops and schools. The complex was in the meantime run down and often the scene of vandalism and other criminal activity; In 2002 a competition for renovation was announced.
