Enoch L. Johnson
Enoch Lewis "Nucky" Johnson (born January 20, 1883 in Galloway Township , † December 9, 1968 in Atlantic City ) was a corrupt politician in the US state of New Jersey .
From 1911 until his arrest in 1941, he controlled Atlantic City. Avoiding prohibition in particular brought him great wealth, as he received a share of the profits through smuggling , gambling and prostitution . The lifting of prohibition in 1933 reduced his revenue. In 1941 he was sentenced to ten years in prison and a $ 20,000 fine for tax evasion.
Johnson's life served as the template for the American TV series Boardwalk Empire .
