Black Sails is an American adventure series developed by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine for cable broadcaster Starz .

The television series tells a story about Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island . She also integrates historical events such as the fall of the Urca de Lima and characters such as the pirates Jack Rackham , Anne Bonny , Charles Vane , Benjamin Hornigold , Edward Low , Blackbeard , Israel Hands , Mary Read and the Governor of the Bahamas Woodes Rogers into the plot. It was produced by Michael Bay, among others .

A total of four seasons were shot. The first broadcast of the first episode in the United States took place on January 25, 2014 on the Starz channel and was also (freely) published on Youtube. The last episode was first broadcast on April 2, 2017 April 2017 published on the streaming portal Maxdome .

action

The events take place about 20 years before the plot of the novel Treasure Island : In 1715, Captain Flint and his crew hunt the Spanish treasure ship Urca de Lima . With the hoped-for large booty, the pirates want to retire on the Caribbean island of New Providence Island , which at that time was populated by outlaws, prostitutes and escaped slaves and was economically ruled by the Guthrie family. In the pirate Charles Vane, whose crew includes pirates Anne Bonny and Jack Rackham, Flint and his crew have a dangerous competitor.

production

In May 2012, the cable broadcaster Starz ordered the pirate series Black Sails without creating a direct-to-series pilot . Michael Bay was the producer. At the end of 2012, the main roles were cast with the well-known actors Toby Stephens , Jessica Parker Kennedy , Tom Hopper and Mark Ryan, among others .

The first two seasons were filmed at Cape Town Film Studios in Neath, Port Talbot and Cape Town . Before the first season was broadcast, a ten-part second season was ordered in July 2013. Filming for the second season began in November 2013.

Starz rented all four stages of the studio for the production. A complete set city was built for the film scenes in Nassau . Two special water tanks were built for the ship and beach scenes. The tank for the ship scenes held five million liters of water and was up to five meters deep. It allowed the use of ship models and wave machines up to 40 meters long. The tank for the beach scenes held seven million liters of water. For the first season, two full-size models of ships were built, one replicating a complete ship, while the second consisted of only one half of the ship. Since the original ship of the pirate team around Captain Flint is sunk at the end of the first season and Flint and his crew steal a Spanish warship ( galleon ) at the beginning of the second season, a third full-size ship was built for the second season.

In October 2014, Starz extended the series for a third season. In August 2015, before the third season was broadcast, Starz announced the order for the fourth and final season.

reception

English speaking area

The criticism in the USA was mixed and in part consisted of criticisms that were often very contradicting. On the aggregator page Rotten Tomatoes , the first season of Black Sails received a tomatometer rating of 64% with an average rating of 6 out of 10 points based on an evaluation of 44 reviews, of which 28 were more positive ( fresh ) and 16 more negative ( rotten ) failed. The aggregator page Metacritic got an overall rating of 57 out of 100 points. To this end, 27 reviews were evaluated, of which 12 were positive, 13 were mixed and 2 were negative.

In England the Independent and Guardian gave largely positive reviews of Black Sails . James Rampton (The Independent) describes the series as a kind of " The Wire on waves", which tells a dark, complex story and clearly differs from conventional pirate depictions. Luke Holland (The Guardian) thinks Black Sails is a bewitching epic. It has broad background stories in which the characters slowly unfold. Despite all the action, Black Sails is more of a character study than an adventure story.

In Australia, a positive review appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald . Michael Idato writes there that the series differs from the usual representation of the genre. Black Sails is an ambitious project that has the characteristics of a historical drama: a complex story that also takes up political developments and questions, and thus something like a political thriller in the age of pirates.

German-speaking area

The criticism in the German-speaking area was mixed. Often comparisons were made to the ZDF four-part Die Schatzinsel (1966) with Michael Ande and the Pirates of the Caribbean films (2003-2011) with Johnny Depp , and Black Sails were mostly judged negatively in comparison to them.

One of the few largely positive reviews appeared in the Frankfurter Rundschau . Harald Keller wrote there that the series, which was filmed with considerable effort in South Africa, offered everything that could be expected from a “proper” pirate series. The embedding in historical political changes around 1715, the integration of historical figures like Charles Vane, Benjamin Hornigold and Anne Bonny and a for some shocking realism also ensure exciting entertainment for viewers who want to see more than a pure action spectacle. Overall, the series is a mixture of adventure, political parable and realistic everyday life of pirates, soldiers and whores.

Christoph Schröder sees Black Sails on time online than one (unsuccessful) border crossing between realism and "flashing" irony. He is bothered by the good looks and the radiant teeth of the leading actors and feels that the portrayal of Nassau resembles that of a “collective amusement park”. Eventually, he longs for Jim Hawkins from Treasure Island and gets a rating of "three out of ten rubber pirate sabers".

Matthias Pöls writes in the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung in a review of the first episode of the series that Black Sails is a kind of good times, bad times in "fun and terrifying pop garb". He sees Luke Arnold as a bad cast for Long John Silver and thinks he'd be much better off in a toothpaste commercial. Viewers who expect fast-paced action over the long term, especially because of the producer Michael Bay, will be disappointed and instead annoyed by "outdated youthful jargon chatting mindless characters". Furthermore, Pöls criticizes the female roles in the film, which from his point of view convey a questionable image of women and portray women as “constantly lustful”, show-ready and weak beings.

The evening newspaper found in their criticism of the first episode that Black Sails a "mix of" Pirates of the Caribbean "setting and bloody" Spartacus "-Action" was that of a "verschnarchten something Story" suffering that only by "tired dialogues ”Instead of“ opulent images ”. All in all, she complains about a lack of “claim, authenticity and originality”.

Christoph Fröhlich compares Black Sails with the series Spartacus and Game of Thrones in Stern . He thinks that the fighting sequences are not as gripping as in Spartacus and that the plot does not reach the complexity and sophistication of Game of Thrones . You can also tell from the cheap-looking special effects that Black Sails does not have the same budget as Game of Thrones . Fröhlich misses multi-layered characters and feels that many of the characters are too woodcut-like, he also sees some logic flaws and criticizes the pirates' unrealistic white teeth. On the other hand, he judges the integration of historical pirates into the plot positively. This will also be much more exciting in the second half of the first season and you will get to see everything that makes good pirate action.

Wolfram Knorr reviews the DVD edition of the first season in Weltwoche and finds the series better than its reputation. Lovers of the genre get their money's worth from his point of view.

Felix Böhme from Serienjunkies.de writes in a review of the pilot episode that “the new Starz series appears to be rather simple entertainment without many nuances”, and goes on to say that viewers who claim authenticity and credibility will be disappointed. He concludes that Black Sails will only “have a rather tired or even ironic smile” and gives 2 out of 5 stars as an overall rating. Christian Schäfer from Serienjunkies.de , who wrote the review for episodes 2 to 8, on the other hand, got a much more positive rating and gave ratings of 3 to 4.5 stars for the other episodes. In the review of the second episode, rated with 4 stars, Schäfer writes that the series has improved after a bumpy start and continues to build in exactly the right places, namely the characters, the worldview and the plot. The motives and actions of the characters involved become more understandable and their social and political ideas are also illuminated. As a result, Black Sails offers more than just "blood and nipples" and sets it apart from other series. In his review of the last episode, which was rated 4.5 stars, Schäfer also draws a final resume for the first season and says that authors have succeeded in creating an impressive network of figures and designing a worldview that may not always be historical, but looks very credible.

Awards

At the 66th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards was Black Sails nominated four times, in the categories of Outstanding Main Title Theme Music , Outstanding Main Title Design , Outstanding Special Visual Effects and Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series. She won two of them, the one for Outstanding Special Visual Effects and Outstanding Sound Editing for a series.
