Welcome 2 My Nightmare is the 2011 released 26 studio album by Alice Cooper . It is a concept album that takes up the story about the character Steven introduced with the 1975 album " Welcome to My Nightmare ". The surviving members of the original band around the singer, guitarist Michael Bruce, bassist Dennis Dunaway and drummer Neal Smith, recorded three tracks with Cooper for the album, which also featured other prominent musicians.

background

"Welcome To My Nightmare", released in 1975, was Alice Cooper's first solo work, the name of which had previously stood for the entire band. With this album, Cooper wanted to create something so unforgettable and overshadow what he had done before. For this purpose, the character of Steven was created, whose nightmares the listener should go through. Cooper stated:

“There is a fine line between fact and fiction. It is well known that in the dream phase you cannot distinguish between them. That's why you have to wake up in order not to lose your mind. If, like Steven, you are unable to wake up, that is the greatest nightmare of all. "

After Cooper had released the album " Along Came a Spider " in 2008, he planned a sequel to which he wanted to record with Bob Ezrin. However, he was not taken with it and referred to the low success of this album. He reminded Cooper of "Welcome To My Nightmare" and asked what if there was another nightmare.

Numerous songwriters and musicians were involved in the album. In addition to Bob Ezrin and Alice Cooper, Desmond Child was also involved in the songwriting; some musical partners from Cooper's past also made their contribution, for example Dick Wagner, Kip Winger, Keri Kelli and Steve Hunter. Also included is the duet What Baby Wants , to which pop artist Ke $ ha not only contributed the vocals, but also the songwriting. For the titles, for which Cooper needed a special “seventies atmosphere”, he made use of the members of his band at the time, Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway and drummer Neal Smith.

The album was released on September 13, 2011 in various versions , some with bonus tracks , on CD, vinyl double album and as a download. The deluxe version of the CD and the record came with a poster and a “ ticket ” for the “Nightmare Express”.

The German magazine Rocks wrote that the album "should at best overwhelm those for whom Alice Cooper was only attractive from 1986 to 1991" . "Welcome 2 My Nightmare" is "finely branched out with the Cooper work of the seventies, without being one in character itself." The "guest contributions by the old Alice Cooper band" conjured up "the crackling atmosphere of yore." The reviewer comes To the conclusion: "A livelier, more varied and better Cooper album has not existed for a long time."

Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic wrote that Cooper "has not had a hit single in the last two decades, but has by no means kept quiet" . However, none of his publications since “Hey Stoopid” (1991) had “the strong profile” of “Welcome 2 My Nightmare”. Given the sequel concept, one could “expect it to be an old-fashioned album” , but it is “one of Alice Cooper's great abilities” that he always produces records that sound “contemporary” , and this album is “no exception” . The guest musicians and producer Bob Ezrin gave “flair and focus” to the album , which made it not only an “unexpectedly successful sequel” , but also Cooper's “best album in decades” .
