Allmusic critic Thom Jurek initially feared that Gill could become a punk singer with the album. But with the album he had proven that he could combine country music and ballads well. He awarded three out of five possible rating units for the album. Chicago Tribune's Chris Dickinson awarded two stars out of four. Richard Cromelin of the Los Angeles Times awarded three out of four stars. Q magazine gave the work three out of five points. Entertainment Weekly awarded the grade “B +”.

The album reached number six on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the charts for 112 weeks. In Canada, When Love Finds You was number 18 on the RPM charts. The album peaked at number two on the US and Canadian country albums charts. The single Whenever You Come Around reached number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the American and Canadian country singles charts. The release What the Cowgirls Do reached number one on the Canadian country charts and number two in the USA. The other four singles from the album reached the following spots in the USA and Canada: When Love Finds You (# 3, # 5), Which Bridge to Cross (Which Bridge to Burn) (# 4, # 3), You Better Think Twice (# 2, # 2) and Go Rest High on That Mountain (# 14, # 7).

In 1995, Vince Gill received a Grammy in the "Best Country Song" category for When Love Finds You and a year later a Grammy in the "Best Male Vocal Performance Country" category for Go Rest High on That Mountain . The album was certified multiple times platinum in the US and Canada and sold more than 4.2 million copies.
