Constitutional referendum in Zanzibar 2010

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The constitutional referendum on Zanzibar 2010 took place on July 31, 2010 and resulted in a good 66% approval for an amendment to the constitution of the state of Zanzibar in the United Republic of Tanzania in East Africa. Zanzibar has its own government, parliament, president and its highest court is not subordinate to the highest court of the Union of Tanzania.

The constitutional amendment legitimized in this way stipulates that there will be two vice-presidents in Zanzibar, the first of whom must always belong to the largest opposition party in parliament. In addition, ministerial offices are now distributed proportionally to the parties according to the number of parliamentary seats won, and the previous post of chief minister is abolished. The sum of these measures creates a much greater division of government power between the two political forces that dominate the island. The following question was put to the persons entitled to vote: "Do you accept the new government structures after the 2010 general election?"
