Election to the National Assembly in Zanzibar 1963
The election to the National Assembly in Zanzibar in 1963 took place on July 8th and 15th, 1963.
The number of seats in parliament increased from 22 to 31, and the result was a victory for the Zanzibar Nationalist Party - and the Zanzibar and Pemba People's Party Alliance, which won seats 18, despite the fact that the Afro-Shirazi Party , which had won 13, claimed 54.3% of the vote.
The ZNP-ZPPP alliance, which involved the two party candidates not running against each other in their fortresses, was asked to form a government and led the country to independence on December 10th of that year. However, on January 12, 1964, the Zanzibar Revolution brought the ASP to power.
