In his research, Leonhard deals with the history of Europe and the world since the 18th century from a comparative perspective. The focus is on the history of liberalism and nationalism, research into multiethnic empires and the history of war and peace. Leonhard's story of the First World War , published in 2014 under the title “Die Büchse der Pandora”, is, according to Michael Epkenhans, “the best book that has ever come onto the market.” Hans-Ulrich Wehler also described it as “the most important book about the first World War ”, it was the“ beginning of a new era in the history of the world war ”.

In 2015 he was reappointed a one-year scholarship from the Munich Historical College. In the academic year 2016/17 Leonhard worked there on his new monograph, which was published in October 2018 under the title "The overwhelmed peace. Versailles and the world 1918–1923".
