Arena Birmingham
The Arena Birmingham is a multi-purpose arena in the English city of Birmingham , United Kingdom . It is used for a wide variety of sporting and cultural events ( concerts , shows , comedy , musicals ) as well as for conferences and exhibitions . Since it opened in 1991, it has hosted several European and World Championships . The hall is owned by the NEC Group.
history
The Arena Birmingham was opened on October 4, 1991 by 100 meter Olympic champion Linford Christie under the name National Indoor Arena. The arena is located at the Old Turn Junction on the BCN Main Line across from the National Sea Life Center in Brindleyplace . Thanks to the movable grandstands, the arena offers a number of up to 15,800 seats (standing), depending on the configuration. The multi-purpose arena is equipped for over 30 sports such as football , boxing , athletics , gymnastics , tennis , netball , basketball , indoor hockey , badminton , judo , wrestling , darts and snooker .
As of mid-2013, the hall was renovated for £ 26 million . The NIA u. a. a glass facade. On December 2, 2014, the venue was officially reopened with a concert by Michael Bublé . With the inauguration, the National Indoor Arena received the sponsor name Barclaycard Arena . Barclays , a credit card issuer , secured the naming rights for five years in September 2014 . Barclaycard ended the sponsorship contract prematurely in May 2016. The name stayed until 2017. The former National Indoor Arena has been called Arena Birmingham since September 1st of that year .
