Oh Land , actually Nanna Øland Fabricius , (born May 2, 1985 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish musician , singer and visual artist in the field of electropop .

life and work

Nanna Øland Fabricius was born as the daughter of the opera singer Bodil Øland and the organist Bendt Fabricius (not to be confused with Bent Fabricius-Bjerre ). At the age of 8 she started taking ballet lessons , at 10 she switched to the ballet school of the Royal Danish Ballet and at 15 she moved to Stockholm to continue her training with the Royal Swedish Ballet . At the age of 18, Fabricius suffered a serious back injury that made it impossible for her to continue dancing professionally.

She then began to write her own songs and to sing under the pseudonym Oh Land . The pseudonym is an allusion to their middle name. In 2007 she put some of her songs on Myspace , where they were discovered by the indie label Fake Records . Fake Records engaged Fabricius for the album Fauna , which was released in 2008, but was hardly noticed outside of their home country Denmark . In 2009 she made a number of successful appearances in the United States , including at the South-by-Southwest Festival in Austin , Texas . There she was spotted and signed by an agent from the record label Epic Records .

Since then she has released the single Sun of A Gun and the EP Oh Land and the album also titled Oh Land . The album reached number 184 on the Billboard 200 and number 5 on the Danish album charts. Her song White Nights reached number 13 in the Danish and number 60 in the German single charts. For the song Sun of A Gun , she worked with British producer Dave McCracken , who has also worked with Depeche Mode , Beyoncé , Shakira and John Legend . Pharrell Williams from NERD as well as Dan Carey ( Sia , MIA , La Roux ) and Lester Mendez (Shakira, Spice Girls ) were also involved in the creation of the album .

With her song Sun of a Gun , Oh Land performed on the David Letterman Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live! on. Oh Land is the winner of the NewNowNext Award 2011 in the Brink of Fame Music Artist category and her video for Sun of a Gun was voted Best Freshman Video by mtvU . She appeared as opening act for Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark and in July / August 2011 for Sia and Katy Perry .

Oh Land uses a drum pad for her live performances, which allows her to play sound samples and which, depending on her interaction with the device, projects images onto balloons. There is also an LED screen attached to the front of the device that lights up in time with your movements.

In January 2011, Øland Fabricius moved from Copenhagen, Vesterbro to Williamsburg , Brooklyn , New York . There she lives with her husband Eske Kath, an artist, and her dog.

Oh Land's music is often compared in the trade press to that of Lykke Li , Goldfrapp, and Little Boots . Even comparisons to Lady Gaga are occasionally tried, but not to describe her musical style, but as an allusion to her stage show.

In 2014, Fabricius worked alongside Mads Mikkelsen in the Danish western The Salvation - Trace of Retribution .
