Vesterbro is a district of the Danish capital Copenhagen and is one of the four historic suburbs ( Brokvarterer ) that surround the city center. Vesterbro was an independent district until 2007.

location

Vesterbro is west of the city center. The neighboring districts are Kongens Enghave in the southwest, Valby in the west and the municipality of Frederiksberg in the north.

history

The name "Vesterbro" originally referred to a country road that led from the west into the city. Until a cholera epidemic in 1853, only a few buildings in the run-up to the city wall were approved, so that around 1000 people lived in the area by 1780. After the epidemic, the ban was lifted and the area was used for residential and industrial buildings. The name of the road was used for the entire area and the road was renamed "Vesterbrogade".

Vesterbro was the working-class neighborhood near the city center. This is where the Kødbyen slaughterhouse district , the Carlsberg brewery and Københavns Hovedbanegård (Copenhagen Central Station), which is surrounded by the red light district , are located. The quarter is in a process of transformation towards a student and bar district, especially in Istedgade .

With the Carlsberg Hovedkontor , the Kongens Bryghus and the SAS Royal Hotel , three of the eight tallest skyscrapers in Denmark are located in the district.

traffic

Since 2019 Vesterbro is with the stations Enghave Plads and København H to the line M3 ( Cityringen ) of Metro Copenhagen connected. With the main station there is a connection to the local and long-distance traffic of the Danish State Railways and to the S-tog system. Like all of Copenhagen, Vesterbro has an excellent cycling network .

One of the main traffic routes is the Vesterbrogade. The street starts in the east at Rådhuspladsen , leads past Tivoli , the SAS Royal Hotel and the main train station, to the western end of the district.
