Band history

Living Sacrifice was one of the first Christian death metal bands. It was founded in the fall of 1989 by Darren "DJ" Johnson (bass / vocals), Lance Garvin (drums) and Bruce Fitzhugh (guitar). In 1990 guitarist Jason Truby joined them. At that time the band members were still very young. DJ was the oldest at 20 and Jason was the youngest at 17. A four-song demo was recorded in 1990 but was never released due to relatively poor quality. After they presented the demo to REX Records , Living Sacrifice signed their first contract.

The "self-titled" debut album was produced in 1991 by Kurt Bachman ( Believer ) and Doug Mann (Label Director) within six days at Catamount Studios and released by REX Records. In order to do this, the musicians had to take time off from school during this time. This earned them a lot of comparisons with other bands, especially Slayer , which inspired them to move towards Death Metal. The album proved to be a great success and stayed in the top ten of the Christian music magazine "Pure Rock Report" for 56 weeks. This was followed by a tour through twenty US cities, including Betrayal as support.

With " Nonexistent " the band released their second album in 1992 with which they changed their style from Thrash to Death Metal with deeply tuned instruments. The production of the album did not have to be done in a hurry this time and took two weeks. DJ also experimented with a different way of singing here, which can best be described as roaring howls.

After a US tour they released their third album “ Inhabit ” in 1994 , which is considered by many to be their toughest output alongside “Nonexistent”. On this album, DJ oriented himself more towards Thrash. After the release, they toured with Malevolent Creation for a week . In 1995 REX Records had to file for bankruptcy. After negotiations, Living Sacrifice was able to secure the rights to their material as well as the master recordings and were free to look for a new record company. To gain access to a wider audience, the band signed a contract with Solid State Records .

1995 DJ left the band. The reasons for his departure are not known, but this change turned out to be fundamental, which was also reflected in the radical shortening of the long hair of all band members. Bruce Fitzhugh took over the vocals from then on, while Chris Truby, Jason's brother, played bass.

With a new line-up, they release their fourth album and their Solid State debut " Reborn " (recorded by Barry Poynter ), which came out in 1997. The style of music changed to metalcore , but the influences of death and thrash also remained part of the music of Living Sacrifice. Many fans consider this album to be the best of the band.

Chris and Jason Truby then left the band. Jay Stacy took over the bass for about a year and a half, until Arthur Green ( Eso-Charis ) took over the part. Rocky Gray joined the band in late 1998 and new songs were written. Rocky Gray influenced the music quite strongly in terms of melody. At the end of 1999 Matt Putman (Eso-Charis) joined in, who expanded the music with additional percussion work.

In 1999 the first three albums were reissued by Solid State.

The fifth album was released in 2000 under the name " The Hammering Process ", which became the best-selling Living Sacrifice album to date after several tours held over a period of two years with POD , Project 86 and Zao .

Two years later, in 2002, the last album for the time being followed with the title " Conceived in Fire ". It was produced by Barry Poynter and mixed by Andy Sneap, who had also worked on albums for Killswitch Engage and Machine Head .

On June 28, 2003, the final concert was held in Little Rock, Arkansas, the place where it all began. They were supported by Underoath , Demon Hunter , The Agony Scene and Extol .

In 2005 Solid State released " In Memoriam, " a Living Sacrifice best-of album. It features three rewritten and recorded songs by Lance Garvin, Rocky Gray and Bruce Fitzhugh.

On February 4th, 2008 it was announced on their Myspace page that the band was working on a new album. In June and July 2008 the band was u. A. with Demon Hunter , Oh, Sleeper , The Famine and Advent on a big USA tour.
