Project 86 is a US-based Christian-influenced rock and metal band from Orange County , California that was founded in the 1996th

history

In 1994 the singer Andrew Schwab decided to form a band, after which he spent the next two years finding suitable members for it. Project 86 was founded in June 1996 by Schwab and drummer Alex Albert. Randy Torres joined them as guitarist and keyboardist. The following year the group signed a deal with BEC Recordings , a sub-label of Tooth & Nail Records . In August 1997, Steven Dail was added as bassist, and he was the third musician to occupy this position in the band. In 1998 the first appearances followed, together with Five Iron Frenzy and Stavesacre . In the same year the self-titled debut album, which was produced by Bryan Carlstrom , was released. Sonny Sandoval can be heard on the album as a guest singer . It sold quite well and the group quickly became one of the label's top selling. Songs from this have been used on TV programs such as Road Rules and The Real World , both on MTV . Then it went on tour with Living Sacrifice and again Stavesacre. In 2000, the second album followed under the name Drawing Black Lines on Atlantic Records and BEC Recordings, which had been produced by Garth Richardson . The song contained on this was broadcast quite often on MTV. In the same year the group was heard with the song PS on the soundtrack for Blair Witch 2 . In October and November of the same year they went on tour through the USA with Linkin Park , POD and (hed) pe . The band was first seen live in Europe in 2001 with a gig in Germany . In 2003, Atlantic Records and Tooth & Nail Records released the third album Truthless Heroes , which was recorded in the summer of 2002 and reached number 146 on the Billboard charts. Due to the dwindling media hype on Nu Metal and the resulting drop in sales ( Truthless Heroes couldn't even sell 100,000 more), the group lost their contract with Atlantic Records in early 2004 after the album was released. In addition, she also separated from her manager.

In April 2003 the group took part in a two-week US tour of Sevendust , which also included Finger Eleven and Trust Company . The album Songs to Burn Your Bridges By was released via Team Black Recordings in 2003 , before it was released in 2004 by Tooth & Nail Records. Towards the end of 2004 the band went on tour with Pillar , Falling Up and Subseven . In autumn 2005 the album ... And the Rest Will Follow followed. The album was recorded in Vancouver in April of that year under the direction of Garth Richardson, who had already worked on the debut album, and reached number 131 on the US charts after its release. In February and March 2006 they went on a US tour together with Chasing Victory and The Fold .

Andrew Schwab live in 2006

In 2007 the album Rival Factions was released, which reached number 124 in the charts. On the album, the cast consists of Schwab and Torres, bassist Steven Dail and drummer Jason Gerken. Jason Martin also contributed keyboard passages to some songs. The band had stood by Ulrich Wild during the production process , then the material had been mixed by Wild, Mike Watts and JR McNeely . The drummer Alex Albert, who can not be heard on the album, had been represented live by various musicians for a long time, as he could not participate for family reasons, but he still had an influence on the songs on the albums. Gerken was not considered an official replacement. In the same year the band could be seen at various festivals such as the Cornerstone Festival , a tour of Tooth & Nail Records with Project and MxPx and a headline tour with Showbread , Inhale Exhale and Sullivan were also held . In 2008 the group was represented at the Dutch Flevo Festival . The following year the album Picket Fence Cartel was released , on which the line-up consists of Dail, Torres and Schwab. The album was able to reach the 137th place in the charts. At the time of publication, the group participated in the Scream the Prayer Tour in part, on the well Haste the Day , The Chariot , Sleeping Giant , Oh, Sleeper , Gwen Stacy , Agraceful , For Today , A Plea for Purging and Corpus Christi were seen . In 2010, after more than 1,500 appearances in ten different countries, the live album 15. Live was released. that was recorded in the summer of that year. At the end of October 2011 the group played at the Rock Without Limits in Balingen , before performing with Everyday Sunday and Sacrety in Ulm in early November . In 2012, under the name Wait for the Siren, the next album followed, which was produced by Steve Wilson and produced by Steve Blackmon . The cast consists of Andrew Welch, guitarist Blake Martin, drummer Rocky Gray and bassist Cody Driggers. Bruce Fitzhugh (Living Sacrifice) and Brian Welch can be heard as guest singers . The release was at number 127 on the US album charts. In November 2014, for the release of the album Knives to the Future, an appearance was held in Little Rock along with Living Sacrifice and The Agony Scene . Two years later in November they went on tour with Death Therapy . In November 2017 the group took part in the Brainstorm Festival in Apeldoorn , the Netherlands . One month later the album Sheep Among Wolves was released , which had been financed by crowdfunding ( PledgeMusic ), with which the band had already had good experiences in the past. The album had been recorded in Nashville , Tennessee , in various recording studios, the specialty being that only one song was recorded per month. So far the band has performed with groups such as Trapt , 30 Seconds to Mars , Queensrÿche , Taproot , August Burns Red , Disciple , Blindside , Liquid Gang , Ultraspank and The OC Supertones .

style

In an interview with Kevin from jesusfreakhideout.com , Andrew Schwab stated that the band does not consider themselves a Christian rock band because they do not make music to spread their Christian faith or just to play for Christians, but to express themselves artistically. Charlotte Dillon from Allmusic described the group's music as Christian -influenced rock. With powerful riffs and a pounding drumming, Project 86 is reminiscent of groups like Tool , Korn , Helmet , Rage Against the Machine and Limp Bizkit . According to Christian Graf in his Nu Metal and Crossover Lexicon , the band was influenced by Tool and Rage Against the Machine. In an interview with Brian McGovern from hmmagazine.com , Andrew Schwab stated that he is mainly influenced by hip-hop , while the other members would rather listen to groups like Sepultura and Deftones . In an interview with thrashboy from mauce.nl , Andrew Schwab stated that Metallica's Kill 'Em All and especially the song Am I Evil? for listening to metal and rock had been influenced. He grew up with classic rock like Led Zeppelin . As a teenager, he heard groups like Run-DMC , Beastie Boys , Slayer and Iron Maiden . Project 86 was initially by Straight Edge - Hardcore punk been influenced bands. After listening to groups like Rage Against the Machine and Deftones, however, they took a different musical direction. Mark Allan Powell wrote in his Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music that the band's music is very similar to that of POD and has often been referred to as Christian rapcore , which suggests a comparison to Korn and Rage Against the Machine. The band itself rejects the assignment to rapcore, because although there is rap in the songs, it does not refer to hip-hop. Rather, she describes her music as a mix of groove , melody, some rap, screams and "strange stuff". At the turn of the millennium, according to Powell, Project 86 was one of the few Christian bands in the mainstream. The debut album is mostly harder rapcore, with cryptic- sounding, down-tuned e-guitars with heavy, sluggish grooves. The singing is half spoken, half raped. The second album Drawing Black Lines is musically more varied than its predecessor and deals with lyrical topics such as pornography or alcoholism . Occasionally one gets closer to Thrash Metal musically . Often one feels when listening to the songs on Stavescare and sometimes at King's X recalls.

According to Rock Hard , the band on Truthless Heroes has moved away from the style of its predecessor Drawing Black Lines , which is very reminiscent of POD with its “groovecore brew”. Instead, more emphasis is placed on pleasing and polyphonic vocal melodies. Little influences from Quicksand and strong parallels to Blindside can be heard in the songs . According to Deanshredder11 from newreleasetoday.com, Rival Factions is the most song-oriented album to date. The songs sound commercial and catchy, but would not lose their intensity. Influences from Danzig , The Psychedelic Furs , Joy Division and early hardcore punk from the east coast of the United States can be heard. In addition, there would be tonal parallels to Queens of the Stone Age and Misfits . Björn Backes from Powermetal.de found Picket Fence Cartel to be energetic, determined and strong-willed. The album is characterized by an unusual mixture of “pounding rhythms and punky-looking hardcore”, which repeatedly approaches post-hardcore . The arrangements are unconventional, while the choruses are melodic. The music sounds as if Rise Against Twiggy Ramirez had joined the band, borrowed the grooves from Marilyn Manson, and incorporated some metalcore .
